Paid my first ever visit to Ormskirk by Merseyrail a couple of days ago and was surprised to have my ticket checked on entrance to the platform as I can't remember the last time I've encountered a ticket check at a non-barriered Merseyrail station. Could this be anything to do with the station being outside Merseyside, and if so why?

Probably just a random revenue check which happens from time to time.

Yep, it’ll be a random check, as happens at Merseyrail stations from time to time.
I've seen it happen several times at Aigburth. It is random. Last time I saw it at Aigburth a well dressed man got very irate because the revenue staff wouldn't let him through without a ticket.
"But I always buy a ticket at the other end!"
"Yeah right, you mean you never buy a ticket, but this time you've been caught!?"
I've seen people try it on at Liverpool Central where there are barriers. Sometimes they have revenue staff on the barriers and you have no way of getting through without paying a penalty fare; but the other day I saw a guy wave his bank card about and say something like "the ticket machine wasn't working". So the guy manning the barrier opened the gate and said "no problem, just go over to the ticket office and buy a ticket".
So he walks through the barrier and straight out of the station!

Nope, just their name badges dont have names on for obvious reasons!!

I don't know a TOC who's RPI'S don't have their names on name badges
Its easy to spot the Merseyrail RPI`s as
1) They have body warn cameras
2) They have what look like leather police wallets (they have a metallic emblem on the outside of the wallet)
3) They normally have thermal ticket printers attached to their bodies and so look as they moonlighting from supermarkets
4) They have a questioning attitude - which isnt a bad thing and finally
If you have a valid ticket (like I do with my Merseytravel All Zones Annual Trio) , they have always been professional & polite to me.

Well you do now...
Now I come to think about it, having passed the woman at the platform entrance at Ormskirk I vaguely noticed someone with a ticket machine on the platform who I thought might be the conductor (the train was in and Ormskirk is a Merseyrail terminus).

They sometimes get some of the resident BTP bods to hover around just outside of the station exit. Wouldn't like to pull that move and walk directly into their arms, could get much more serious than a penalty fare or just paying for the damn ticket.

Merseyrail guards don't do revenue so it won't have been them.
