The disadvantage of the coach is that there's no disabled access at Crianlarich.

Oh? & that goes for about half of the stations in Scotland?
Off topic: is there a dedicated program to redress this silly state of affairs within the next few years?

The program naturally concentrates on the busiest stations. The issue isn't, of course, just for PRMs, it also affects those with heavy luggage and bicycles.

Meanwhile, back to our normal programming....

Northbound Highlander noted at Perth at 0805 this morning, seemingly having lost 2 hours at Oxenholme. But at least it was on the move.

The Twitter suggested that the FW was cancelled last night and there was severe disruption generally, but no clue as to why.

Broken down freight train going by some of their responses.

Another response says “Due to the disruption it was not possible to separate the Fort William portion”. I wonder if they have just decided to send it to aberdeen or if there has been an additional problem with the split.

Possibly there wasn't time to faff about with the shunt.

66119 failed on 4S49 Daventry-Mossend in the Tebay area. 66135 ran from Carlisle to rescue it.

4S59 is pathed to run 25 mins behind the Down Highlander (1S25) but was running ahead of it (36 Early) at the point it failed.

Fort William and Aberdeen trains are still running with old stock, so I doubt that the splitting issues would have been the cause

I’m wondering whether the cancellation of the Fort William portion has anything to do with the fact that there were no crew to work it who had enough hours left? I’m not sure about drivers, but the train manager between Edinburgh and Dalmuir is (if I remember rightly) a Dalmuir guard on a night shift, who might have been out of hours by the time 1Y11 could have departed, and the F&G Sleeper host on a Sunday night out of Euston is London based and would not have been able to work to Fort William and get the required nine hours’ rest before booking on again. Perhaps there were no crew with hours left who could replace these.

I have known 1Y11 still to run when the combined sleeper is three hours late or more into Waverley, though- admittedly that has been on nights when it has had Scottish based hosts (and perhaps drivers/guards with enough hours have been available).

No surprise there I’m afraid, as the sleeper stock for it is in Aberdeen, as it remained attached to 1A25 this morning (and the London-based host who was meant to go to Fort William is possibly lodging in Edinburgh). I presume the seated coach and lounge stayed in Edinburgh, so things should be back to normal tomorrow morning.

I was on the Fort William sleeper tonight. Didn't even notice the standing in Oxenholme but when I woke up around 06:30 we were not yet in Edinburgh. Conductor said something about a train fault, why the portion couldn't go to Fort William and I overheard someone talking about there not being enough staff for splitting. Arrived Dundee around 08:20 and Fort William at 12:00.

Will look out for it as it passes Camden after 2115.

I don't think they are interchangeable!

It's probably one of the few mk3s that's been repainted and not subsequently scrapped!

I’m afraid you’re imagining things. Mk3 and mk5 coaches cannot be coupled together. There are a few mk3 (and mk2) coaches that were repainted a few years ago. It’s probably one of those.

Is it possible that it’s just one of the Mk3s with the CS livery?

There were a few done when Serco took over for publicity. Can’t see it being a Mk5. It’s dofferent couplers is it not?

The couple of Mk3s done were vinyl wraps. Only eight of the Mk3s have been scrapped to date (none of which were the CS-liveried ones).
A few of the Mk2s that Serco sold to Eastern Rail Services (and leased back) have also been painted (properly) in CS livery.

  • I did wonder, knowing Mk3s and 5s different in many ways. Obviously what I saw was a MK3 with MK5 vinyls , thanks for clarification , I did ask for confirmation or not.

Are there any further updates on mk5 introduction on the highlander? I'm doing an ALR next month and wouldn't mind a last run on the old stock if its still running.

Early October is what's being heard, but that's just gossip. I think you should be fine for mk3s in mid September.
