Hello. I'm looking for the cheapest direct fares for 4 adults. Milton Keynes to Glasgow return.

We're intending to leave Milton Keynes Central on the evening of Thu 21 Nov.

Returning Sat 23 Nov, time of day not particularly important.

I can see that today I can book an advance fare for the outbound leg, but no advance fares show on the return leg.

I can also get a group discount web booking for the outbound leg which is handy.

Should I book today, or is it likely that Advance Fares for the return leg will be available before the outbound advance fares sell out, enabling me to book a return ticket including advance fares for both legs?

You are a little early for advance fares for the 23rd, weekend tickets up to Saturday the 16th are available now. They generally release weekday tickets earlier than weekend ones, up to 24 weeks for weekdays, 12 for weekends. Scheduled engineering work can mean advances do not get released but there doesn't appear to be any on the dates in question.

The calendar on the below link shows the current status.

You could wait until the returns are released or you can buy the outward portions now, if they are all advances there won't be any penalty for booking both sections individually as advances are priced as singles, if for some reason you don't get cheap advances for your return you could end up paying more by buying the two legs separately though.

There probably won't be much if any difference in the weekday prices from now until the 23 Nov advances are released but the cheapest levels do sell out as time goes on, have a look at the fares for the same day/time a few weeks before your trip to get an indication of the sale rates.

Tricky one, but if you are happy with the outward journey, and are happy to commit to the return journey when fares go on sale, go for it.

But it may be worth checking an accredited ticket splitting site first, especially if you don't mind a slower journey (the other day I found a ticket from Brighton to Edinburgh for about £18 for @grey1404 by using the advanced options in Trainsplit, specifying avoiding Virgin Trains and via Liverpool, but that was a very slow journey compared to going on Virgin), for example you could try Loco2 or Trainsplit (others are available)

Thanks for the advice. I waited until today and bought a return ticket which included advance prices on both legs. The return leg advance tickets only became available today, thankfully the outbound leg advance tickets were still available.

There are 4 of us travelling, so we got a group booking discount too.
