Yep, I hate nights, says he who gets up at 0200 hours one week and finishes about 02:30 the next.......

Many like nights, I don’t mind them at all......

That's fair enough although clearly not enough qualified drivers internally were tempted with the prospect - even with a free move!

Haven't seen any notices internally to say that it will be a free move.

Is this a new depot? Any idea what the work is likely to be?

Yes, brand new SWR depot based at Yeovil Junction.

At a guess, Exeter to Waterloo and to Weymouth for summer runs.

Just double checked a document and it says that drivers volunteering will have it treated as an addition 8ii move.

May i just ask what a free move is?

Most TOCs allow a driver to move depits after 3 years productive driving. You can't move again internally until after 15 years. A free move doesn't count towards any move used already. I think it's mainly used for new depot opening such as this.

That's really good info to know.

Im not currently a driver but hoping to be successful soon. Didnt know there was restrictions to how many times you can move.

Thanks again

It's a hold over from BR days, when that move could be from Penzance to Wick or anywhere in the country providing there was a vacancy. A lot of depots were "dead man's shoes" however as people could wait for years to get into a sought after depot.

Privatisation brought an be to that, 'clause 8ii' moves only apply to the company you work for now. Anything else means you have to go through the whole recruitment and selection process to a new company and don't take any 'seniority' with you, though in most cases you are treated as a qualified driver , which means normally only induction and traction and route training is needed if required.

Out of interest where are the most sought after SWR depots?

I'd guess Fratton, Bournemouth, Weymouth and Salisbury perhaps soon Yeovil too

I’d imagine this one will be rather sought after for existing SWR drivers, but they may well create vacancies elsewhere? I’m surprised there was even a need to advertise for trainees to be honest?

Forget northam exists it's very small ?,
Surprising Southampton doesn't have a bigger depot
Southampton Central is the second busiest station outside London to not have a train crew depot (after Liverpool Central)

Well at the time that Yeovil was mooted as getting a depot, so was Southampton.

For reasons I'm not fully aware of, Southampton has been dropped for now.

There has been talk of rekindling a depot at Eastleigh and I'm aware that Siemens at Northam may want to get rid of the SWR depot as the SWR depot are mere guests at Northam.
