Good idea, and if it was before the Advance ticket was used, then yes that would work, but from my reading of a post above, my understanding is that it appears to be affecting the return portion and that the outward leg has already occured.

Makes no difference at all. The Advance is booked solely to allow the SSS to be purchased and I'm pretty sure that Advance ticket could be cancelled if agreed before the purchase.

What is the journey? Also, is it with a Railcard discount or not?
King's Cross to Newcastle - with railcard

Correct!

Raileasy did suggest something similar in booking two Super Off Peak Single (online) to form a return journey and then returning the second for a refund.
However, they would not budge beyond a 50% reduction in admin fee for refunding this second surplus ticket. This meant I would have to pay £2.50 booking fee for making the replacement booking, £5 cancellation fee AND the usual £10 change fee.

Fortunately, in the end I was very lucky and managed to find a very last minute Advance for £10 less than the original ticket so I will just submit for a refund.

How wonderful it is to deal with an online retailer when you want to change the date :(

Although it is suggested upthread that an Advance Single and Super Off Peak Single combo should be treated as a return ticket with an outward and return portion, I'm of the understanding they are single tickets. So you should be able to refund just the Super Off Peak Single for £10 and replace it with a new one.

It could have been done at a ticket office - certainly where I am there's discretion to waive fees etc. But at least you were able to find a workaround. Happy travels!

I tried at King's Cross today where you would expect these would be most frequently seen and was advised that there was nothing they could do as this ticket is not for sale offline!

Yes...they have their reasons for saying so, sometimes you have to shop around. Part of the job is finding ways on the computer to do things to comply with the NRCoT. Forever doing legitimate fudges and NRCoT compliance is an accepted reason for doing so. It's a very confusing system to navigate so doing what's reasonable to make things easy for customers is a top priority.

I tried to change one of these tickets yesterday at KingsX. They refused saying 'it's an online ticket and can only be changed online'.
By the way, does all that ORR stuff about misleading/inconsistent terms and conditions stuff still apply, ie. you can rely whatever you were told on any official website etc., ie in this case that any Super Off Peak fare can be discounted by the Two-Together Railcard rather than only the Super Off Peaks that our booking systems permit to be discounted. Presumably they've given up trying to enforce anything?

LNER's instructions for non advance tickets are to refund with the original retailer and rebook. This is in line with the Knowledge Base entry on when not to charge an Admin Fee.

But the re-booking will cost nearly twice the price of the original fare.
