Internally they are similar and use some of the same on-board bits of kit. In every other way they are different.

In terms of construction and profile, how similar are the bodyshells between the Mk5/5a and recent GB-spec Civity units? How similar are the bodyshells of said Civity classes to each other?

In winter, 185's can get rather cold during station calls, with the doors wide open, so the reversion to end doors is likely to solve that.

Totally agree. I find the centre doors cause discomfort on long journeys, when you're trying to relax and all the noise/air from the station just carries straight into the passenger compartment. At least with doors at each end and walls to seperate them, this reduces the amount of noise/cold air that goes into the cabin.

Call me old-school, but I have to say that I find it a bit unusual when people are more concerned about the coaching stock than the loco.

Why? Because this is the Mk5a Coaching stock thread.

I myself am a rail enthusiast, a passenger and a driver, so all aspects are of interest.

Yes the railway is not just a playground for some of you.

Well, I guess it's down to the fact that I'll only ever get to travel in the coach, so erm, that's the bit I'll touch and feel. Now, if someone could give me a cab ride, that may well change.

Sorry that I didn't make myself clear upthread. I wasn't questioning aspects of the coaching stock from a passenger perspective.

What I was highlighting was the concern amongst some enthusiasts whether it will be set TP9 or TP11, rather than which 68 is on the front/back.

I think we need a separate thread in the Diagrams forum to focus on the workings. Indeed, it could be expanded to include all 68 passenger services. What do folk think?

I don't see why not - the Nova 3s are in (limited, slightly unofficial) service now on set diagrams, there's already similar threads for the 195s and 331s which were created around their first week of service. The majority of posts over the last week are around diagrams, there's clearly enough for a separate thread.

Well as it was me who first asked which sets were going to be out, i take it you were having a go at me. If you want to be a spotter or a basher good for you, bin there done that, and as a driver have drove plenty loco's as well and what i drive now, nothing wrong with any of that.

I'm an enthusiast, so am i not allowed to ask about LHCS just because you only like loco's?

So my ask about sets was because to have two trains in service by the end of this month there needs to be at least 2 good sets available.

You don't mind me asking the question do you?

And to answer your question, we currently have TP09 and TP11 with at least one more due to come good in due course. :)

Yep been on TP09 with 68027, had a slight ETS (Electric Train Supply) problem but that was reset and ok thereafter.

So hopefully with 1 more set ready soon TPE should be able to run a reliable 2 trains in passenger service later this month for much needed capacity.

Thankyou.

A fair number will be interested in doing each set, just as they would with units, some will go as far as each coach, others as far as sitting in each seat in each coach if it’s a route they use often..... whatever interests people.

And it's silly obsessions like this ^ is the reason the Branch Line Society does phenomenally well and puts on some cracking railtours. And long may they continue! XD

I have no issue with anyone getting any enjoyment out of railways in whatever niche they want. We're all interested in some way otherwise we wouldn't be here, although I personally won't be trying to sit in every seat or visit every toilet in the mk5 fleet ;)

What I do have an issue with, and unfortunately the introduction of these trains has seen both occur:

1) People with questionable manners, unacceptable language around children and poor personal hygiene treating the coach like they own it.

2) People asking in desperation and, again, without manners about 'when will the 68s be swapped over' and 'will there be a set out on 2nd october as I'm up north for the day?' They're going to be around for decades, what's the mad rush??

I've partaken in a couple of mk5a journeys to see what they are like as a train, as I'll be using them a lot living in York, but I won't be going out of my way to do any more until, god willing, the novelty wears off.

There is a software fix for this but it needs to be proven good before being rolled out. Better the devil you know and all that. Last thing you’d want is to drop a fix that then causes something else unexpected

Just a quick phone shot from me, 68027 on 1E39 passing the former mills and warehouses of Dewsbury.

As a humble fare paying passenger, waiting for these new trains since December 2017, I am enormously disappointed. First used the new train today. Harsh ride, felt every rail joint and point, rock hard seat and seat not aligned with windows. Still overcrowded with the aisles full. Conductor announced plenty of seats free in front coaches but not so.
