Trainsheds make up a massive part of the grand, aesthetically pleasing stations in Britain’s biggest towns and cities. Stations such as Bournemouth, York and all of the London terminals would not be the same without them.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that Trainsheds are only found in the largest stations, but that is not the case. Much smaller stations such as Frome, which doesn’t even have a regular hourly service, manage to maintain a roof over the tracks. On the other end of the scale, Southampton Central, one of the largest towns on the South Coast with over 10 trains per hour passing through its four lengthy platforms, has never even had one.

So I want to know if there are any larger stations without a trainshed, and any smaller stations that do have one. For the purposes of this thread, I define size as the total area of the station concourse.

You can argue that North Road (Darlington) has a train shed on its single platform - although the roof doesn't cover the bit the trains stop in.

Interesting idea for a thread.

I guess that the tropical South Yorkshire weather is probably the reason why Sheffield Midland lacks the kind of roof that you are taking about. (the only bit above the tracks is footbridge)

Surely Birmingham New Street or Euston, neither have a train shed in the traditional sense. Blackpool North current station is another one, although the original station did have

Sheffield Midland did have one.
Beverley, Scarborough, Filey and Pickering have a train shed now. A lot of northern and eastern Yorkshire stations had one including Driffield, Guisborough, Barnard Castle and of course Richmond. I think Whitby Town had one back in the 1950s.

With 17 platforms I think Clapham Junction is the largest station without a trainshed. The recent demolition of the one at London Bridge makes it the only "London Terminal" without some sort of covering over the tracks (more than platform canopies, either a traditional shed or more modern over-decking).

For the purposes of this thread, I define size as the total area of the station concourse.

The concourse is the circulating area at the head of terminal platforms, is that what you actually mean? Not something I can easily find out, so I'll go with largest number of platforms (I think the smallest (1 and 2) have been mentioned:

Clapham Junction (as edwin_m has just said) has 17, London Bridge 15, Stratford has 14 (18 if you include Docklands, and ignoring the double sided Central Line one).
Next up I think are Orpington and Cardiff C have 8

I meant size as in the total area of the concourse and platforms combined.

Alnwick (now the very fine Barter Books) I assume had one, unless the present roof is new.

The North Eastern Railway, as befitted the UK's premier railway, built impressive stations such as these and the likes of York, Darlington Newcastle. Travel south and compare with the stations built by the dead loss GN

Not a small station in terms of passenger numbers, but I do like Canary Wharf station on the DLR which really stands out against the other DLR stations, many of which are pretty basic

Edge hill station will see on average 23 tph over 4 platforms, the best its ever had was station platform canopies which were removed in the late 70s or early 80s due to neglect.
Personally I would go for Clapham junction station as being my choice for busyist without ever having had a trainshed roof.

Frome still has a petite wooden trainshed.

I would have thought that Nottingham Midland is one of the largest hubs which was built without a train shed.

Going off at a slight tangent, is the new bit at the north end of Farringdon the last new arched station canopy to be installed? Can anyone think of another similar extension?

There are probably loads of stations that used to have a trainshed. Local to me, Stockton and Middlesbrough are but two of them. Back on topic, Newcastle Central is a decent sized trainshed.
