How likely is it that a train from Sheffield to Rotherham Central is a Pacer?
As a regular Rotherham user, I'd say very likely. Sometimes a 158 turns up on a Leeds via Moorthorpe, but not often, while the other services are pacers for the vast majority. Saw a couple of 153s recently, but very few 150s.

I'm going to get the 12:45 service from Leeds to Sheffield via Wakefield Westgate, the timings suggest it's a 142/144 on RTT so I'm hoping that it is. (Although it's Northern, so could be anything)
Not going all the way to South Yorkshire to get my ears deafened by a 158!

Sorry to break it to you, but you will be defended going from Meadowhall to Rotherham on a Pacer - it's one long corner on the Holmes Chord and there is a lot of deafening flange noise.

Believe me, I know how noisy Pacers are (the ones around Cardiff are very screechy too!) but because they will be gone soon I am keen to ride them about. I am also considering a ride on one from Doncaster to Meadowhall, an even louder experience.
BTW: Does anyone know what will happen to 144012 (The glorified pacer with accessible toilet)? I'm sure it could still remain somewhere, on a small route with 1 diagram e.g. Oxenholme to Windermere or Doncaster to Scunthorpe.

Nice snarl-up at Edale at the moment. The 1149 ex-Picc stopper has come to a stand just beyond the station, the Cleethorpes is probably somewhere around Chinley (the tracking looks to have gone a bit haywire), the EM is stopped at Stockport and the following Cleethorpes is at Picc. The 1248 ex-Picc stopper has been cancelled, but the following 1349 has departed, perhaps it's going to be terminated at Chinley if the line is still blocked at Edale. Assuming the 1149 is Pacer-operated, it may not be, of course.

A moment or two after I completed the above the situation appears to have been resolved and the 1149 has continued on its way, 108L. The EM (1151 ex-Liverpool) departed Stockport at 1423 (88L), the 1253 Airport - Cleethorpes has departed Piccadilly also at 1423 (65L), the next Cleethorpes has gone only three minutes later, at 1426 (8L), the 1251 Liverpool - Norwich has left Oxford Road at 1428 (49L), and the 1351 Liverpool - Norwich has left Lime Street at 1424 (33L). The 1349 ex-Picc stopper arrived Chinley at its scheduled time of 1423, i.e. just after the line had been cleared at Edale, and it has continued towards Sheffield unimpeded. I don't know what happened to the 1153 Airport - Cleethorpes, it seems to have fallen completely off the tracking.

I hear a lot of deafening flange noise at Mexborough, especially if I’m outside.

Apart from the Tram Train, what workings into Rotherham are not possible pacer services?
At Rotherham Central, apart from the freight train that I went to see, none. I was just trying to pre-empt the "what about the tram-train" questions from the pendantic wing of the forum.
To put it another way, everything through Rotherham Central in that hour that could have been a pacer, was a pacer, and there were seven of them. But there were other services through Rotherham that didn't go via Central, and those were not part of the pacer equation, being TP and XC services and the fast Hull.

And yes, well spotted, there's a deliberate typo in the above! Another one for the pendants.

Thanks for clearing up. Hopefully on Friday this consistency continues...

At my time at Doncaster and Sheffield, I only saw a single 144, this was 144012 (PRM Modified), terminating at Sheffield from Hull at 14:12. However, the 142s were about, 2 were on Doncaster to Scunthorpe duty, 1 was on a Sheffield to Adwick diagram and another between Leeds and Sheffield!
Are there any routes where your guaranteed (or extremely likely) to get a 144? Or at least a station at a certain time period?

Sheffield to Huddersfield pretty much guaranteed 144.

The 2055 and 2200 arrivals from Manchester Piccadilly at Sheffield Midland both seemed booked for 142 x 2 M-F . Both diagrams arrive at Sheffield earlier in the evening. Arrivals and departures on the Sheffield- Manchester all stations stoppers are booked for platform 2C and 7 , if platform 2C is booked on RTT it’s unlikely to be a 142 x 2 as the platform is too short.
Also observed as 142 x 2 is the 2252 M-F arrival at Sheffield from Manchester which forms the 2327 return .

Thanks to all who offered advice after my initial question. I managed to have a successful day yesterday with 4 decent length Pacer rides in the Sheffield - Manchester - Huddersfield triangle, including one with bus seats!

In 1986 on holiday in Exmouth from Preston I had my first experience of these then new modern trains. They were called Skippers down in Devon. Where did that name originate from?
