Smith out cheaply. He only got 118.

Oh no. He isnt. A no ball. ffs.
Plus there was that c&b chance for Archer yesterday.

Hang on we are in the nervous 140s now.

After starting 212 days later than everyone else. Steve Smith is the highest run scorer this year.
If he is in the line up the opposition should just forfeit. There is no hope of anything close to a victory if he is in the opposing team.

How right Michael Vaughan was to say before the start that it was nonsense to say England were taking momentum from Headingley into this match.

As good as Smith was yesterday England didn't help themselves by not taking the chances they created. The best we can do now is hope for a weather influenced draw and move on.

On to the Oval and draft Paul Collingwood into the team: maybe Marcus Trescothick could manage one last match before retirement too. Choose emoji to suit.

If you're going to more than one Ashes test, don't buy a programme second time around. The Edgbaston & Old Trafford issues were absolutely identical apart from the cover and page 3. Like a mug, I bought both for £6 a go and didn't realize till I got home.

It is all well and good to say that Burns and Root deserve praise for their recovery from two wickets down for less than 30 on the board, but they should take a leaf out of Smith's tactical evaluation, as to build their partnership until so near to the close of play chasing a total of almost 500 then both were dismissed was poor cricket indeed. Then we were subjected to the sight of Roy being totally and utterly bowled middle stump, leaving England five wickets down at close of play with only 200 on the board.

Well, the follow-on has been avoided. England 301-9, Buttler 41 not out.
I wonder whether Australia would have enforced the follow-on: I suspect not. The Aussies wanted Cummins and co fresh, and look what happened. Any chance England had was gone during the Aussies second innings with Stokes unable to bowl, it not being a spinner's wicket and England's inexplicable choice of the journeyman Craig Overton as third seamer. Unless England somehow win this match (lightning striking twice?), the selectors and manager should all stand down before the Oval test.

Back from OT after a couple of days of cricket.

Day 3 was a drudge - England dug in as they should, which meant for an uninspiring afternoon and evening for the spectator.

Things livened up a little today during the Aussie innings when we actually showed some spirit with Broad and Archer ripping into the opposition with the support of the crowd. Even Smith was a little rattled. At first. Then the positivity seemed to slip again and before long they've declared and we've lost our opening batsman for a golden duck. At which point we thought to hit the tram and beat the rush.

Having seen Moeen Ali's performance in the T20 last night, you have to wonder why he's not playing. Decent spinning batsman.

Picking players who are in form in the shorter forms of the game hasn't worked with Roy.

Was looking forward to a good (English) Ashes series. Can't face watching tomorrow. :(

Don't worry about it, Sir Ben was spotted spending another £50 in Nandos this evening in anticipation. He'll be in at 11:07 and will bat all day.

Roy's a much more inexperienced player than Ali; Ali has test credentials and I'd take him over Leach.
