Omio always has the highest cashback on the cashback sites but seems to have started charging fees, sometimes.

Does anyone know how they calculate them and which fares are subject to them?

I have absolutely no idea although I’m not surprised. I’m not sure who knows how they calculate the fees but trying a test purchase came up with no fee?

It is possible to do both. Though if you want to support Trainsplit, there is 2% cashback offered through Raileasy anyway with Topcashback.

Yes, agreed that’s probably what he means, not that it makes sense of course, as not only is it a saving, not cashback, but you can of course collect cashback even if you split tickets.

The terminology "cashback" I used was in the sense of money in your pocket that you don't have to spend.

I haven't used Omio since, domestically, their booking engine is very limited. As an example, I'm travelling from Tweedbank to New Cumnock (and back) tomorrow (7/9) and they can find no ticket.
Regarding cashback, using Quidco, Chiltern Railways are, currently, offering 5% but this would be UK travel only, of course.

From my experience there is no booking fee if you book on the day of travel. Anything booked before that seems to attract a fee which I reckon is 1.5% and seems to apply to all fares. I haven't seen the fee structure listed on their site anywhere

I often have problems using their website, although the mobile version seems better. The only reason I have kept using them recently is the very generous 20% cashback which is has been available for the past few weeks via the perksatwork.com site, which is a staff benefit scheme that some employers offer.

I’d agree with that to an extent in that I attempted to book a train for travel today at 00.45 last night and it still tried to add a fee, so I’m wondering if there is perhaps a cutoff time at which they bring the fee in rather than simply being “same day.” I actually made the same booking when at about 08.10 this morning and no fee was charged.

The ticket was £29.40 and the fee listed was 50p which is slightly more than the 1.5% you suggest, unless maybe they always round up to a scale.

And you can now get 20% on TopCashback; mine has tracked within the hour for a very generous £5.98.

It might be something to do with Omio being based in Germany and continental time differences. Even though over there they should be one hour ahead anyway I suspect that if you tried at 01.01 UK time it would have been charge free.

I say this as there was a bug on their website for a while where a UK journey search with a specified time would return results that were one hour out. I suspect that was also linked to continental time differences.

I still find their website very clunky but like you I find the 20% cashback rather attractive and can make an exception!

I was surprised to see that Omio were also offering e-tickets for my journeys with GTR, as soon as GTR started selling them.

I was wondering about time zones but surely if it’s based on the time in Germany (or somewhere else in Europe) then at 00.45 it would have been 01.45 as Europe are ahead of us time wise.

It could be using UTC rather than local time, so it thinks it is 23:45 at 00:45. Would be easy to see if that is the case once the clocks change.
