Hi all,
I'm going to Sheffield soon, and I fancy a ride on the Supertram. I was looking at the ticketing options, and they seem to confuse me. From what I've heard there are no ticket machines, but instead staff on board every tram to buy tickets from. I wanted to get a few trips in, notably on the Tram Train, however I cant seem to figure out what ticket to buy.
A return ticket is stated, however does this allow you to change tram? For example, if I was to buy a ticket from Sheffield Station to Tinsley, would the inspector mark my ticket on the first tram, and then when I board the tram train its not allowed? A day ticket is considerably more expensive, double the price of a NET day ticket.
The other thing i'm wondering about is student tickets. I am 17 years old, and have a student pass that allows me to get student discounts anywhere but I cant work out what ticket to buy, because some tickets state its for people living in sheffield, some don't. Do I qualify for a young persons ticket because I'm under 18, can i show a pass e.g. an oyster proving im under 18? Its been puzzling me and I'm eager to find out what to get!

My interpretation is that at 17 you probably aren't entitled to any discounts unless you're a resident.
When I visited, I got an all day ticket costing £4.20. I'd definitely recommend that if you're taking several trips.

It would be nice to have a ticket that allows me to ride on whatever, I may seem spoilt but it doesn't seem right for only 1 group of ticket to be available for visitors, I don't know any other light rail network that uses that.
£4.20 isnt great, considering tickets are cheaper on other networks e.g Metrolink or the NET, but it'll do if nothing else is available.

If you're doing anything else, and potentially of value depending on where you're coming from, there's also the day tickets: South Yorkshire Connect (all trams and buses) at £6.80 and the South Yorkshire Connect Plus (all trams buses and trains) at £8.50, both covering the Sheffield/Rotherham/Barnsley/Doncaster areas. i.e. all of South Yorkshire.

If you’re arriving in Sheffield by train then the Sheffield Plusbus is good value at £4 or £2.65 with a railcard. Covers the who,e team network.

At any station.

I am unsure if the Guard would be prepared to sell it; I suspect not between Doncaster and Sheffield. And I don't think I'd be wanting one on till roll stock either!

If I would buy an off peak ticket from Doncaster to Sheffield in advance, but from my local station in London, will it give me the option to buy a plus bus ticket for Sheffield on the day?

You can’t buy a ticket to Sheffield Plus Bus ticket from another station within South Yorkshire, according to https://www.plusbus.info/ but a Doncaster Plus Bus is valid on the trams (and all buses across South Yorkshire) https://www.plusbus.info/doncaster

So if you’re buying separate London-Doncaster and Doncaster-Sheffield tickets, get your Doncaster Plus Bus as the add on to your ticket from London.

Exactly, you can buy a plusbus ticket from the machine that connects to the destination of your ticket (e.g. if you buy a ticket to Brighton you can add a Brighton plusbus ticket.) This means that if you buy a ticket to Sheffield, no matter what the origin station is you can add a plusbus ticket. However you cannot add on a plusbus ticket if you buy the tickets from a station in South Yorkshire. I bought my Doncaster to Sheffield ticket from my local station (Surrey) and I got my Sheffield Plusbus with it.
Note that the info on the website about ticket machines where you can buy Plusbus at only the listed stations below is incorrect, my station wasn't on the list and I was able to. You can buy one at any ticket machine that is the same type as ones on Southern and South Western Railway.

As mentioned above, to get a South Yorkshire plusbus (be that Doncaster, Barnsley, Meadowhall, Rotherham or Sheffield) ticket your journey must start outside South Yorkshire - therefore you want to be adding it to your London-Doncaster ticket if you are split ticketing at Doncaster. The Plusbus offers unlimited travel on any bus or tram in South Yorkshire. You can buy it online at the same time as your train ticket or from station ticket offices. Some train operators vending machines can sell them too, but only at the same time as a train ticket - it is designed to be an inclusive package for a through journey.

For travel within South Yorkshire, there is a South Yorkshire Connect Plus ticket which offers a days unlimited train, bus and tram travel anywhere in the county. This costs £8.50 for adults, £3.90 for under 11s and holders of Travel South Yorkshire concessionary passes. If you are doing train Doncaster to Sheffield then a few tram rides, this may work out better value than getting a Doncaster-Sheffield train ticket. You can buy it from staffed rail ticket offices, tram conductors, bus drivers, the Stagecoach bus app and Travel South Yorkshire vending machines (located in bus stations). See www.sytravelmaster.com.

For tram only tickets the Dayrider offering unlimited travel is £4.20. This is sold on tram by conductors (cash only) and on the Stagecoach bus app. The only student discounted day ticket is sold exclusively by the University of Sheffield student union box office, apart from that the student tickets are monthly and annual passes sold online.

Child tickets are part of the Travel South Yorkshire subsidised concessionary fare scheme. If you are over 11 you must be resident in South Yorkshire and have a concessionary pass issued by the local authority to enjoy the discount. The one exception is the Stagecoach Explorer priced at £4.60, offering unlimted travel on all Stagecoach buses and trams throughout South & West Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire which is open to anyone under 18 (ID may be requested).

The return ticket (£3) is only available for short journeys, one outward journey and one return journey - although break of journey is permitted for a maximum of 1 hour (On your return leg the conductor writes the time of boarding on the ticket). On Tram Train from Sheffield Cathedral it is available as far as Nunnery Square, from Rotherham it is available as far as Arena.

Incorrect, it depends on where you buy the ticket, I bought tickets from a ticket machine outside South Yorkshire, the journey however was entirely in South Yorkshire (Doncaster to Sheffield), and I got the option to buy a Sheffield Plusbus for £4.

That seems very good value, that beats any combination from Doncaster to Sheffield. Are there any more of these for other counties (Doncaster and Sheffield are really the only 2 big locations in South Yorkshire). One for West Midlands could be useful!

The terms and conditions of the South Yorkshire Plusbus state that it is only valid in conjunction with a train ticket to/from a station outside South Yorkshire. I don't dispute it may be physically possible to buy one though!

I did a day on a SYConnect+ with an anytime return from South Elmshall to Leeds (£5.75 on a railcard) allowing travel on Supertrams including the tramtrains to Rotherham then a ride between Doncaster and Leeds and back on a 331.

Thank you for the links. The PlusBus ticket itself doesn't state where it was bought or what tickets its connected with, so I think I'm ok. I will try to follow the T&Cs in future, but considering I'm not a regular visitor of South Yorkshire or started my journey from there, I don't think its doing much harm.

Nottingham to Sheffield is under £5 off peak without railcard, you could ride both the Supertram and the NET in the same day for under £10, and see the 331s at Doncaster!

I had travelled up from St Albans on a split deal to Sheffield but we actually went to Leeds on the 331, (non-stop as it happens because the original one failed at Doncaster).

You shouldn't have a problem using it, I cannot see bus drivers or tram conductors caring where your train journey was from!

Exactly, I just hope I don't come across a conductor that has no idea what a PlusBus is, but Im sure many of them will.

Never had an issue using PlusBus on Supertram. You should be fine in that respect.
