Anyone taking advantage of this offer? Any advice on what stations to get off at and what to see, as I've never been in this area?

To thank you for your patience during the delay in bringing the new trains into service, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has secured a month of free travel on London Overground's Gospel Oak to Barking services. This is being funded by Bombardier Transportation which makes the new trains.

Free travel dates
We are giving one month's free travel for journeys made on London Overground's Gospel Oak to Barking services between 31 August and 1 October 2019 (inclusive).

You must have a valid ticket or validated Oyster, contactless card or device to travel on this route during the month of free travel. If you don't, you may be charged a penalty fare.

The free travel will be offered through a refund. You will be refunded for the Gospel Oak to Barking part of journeys between 31 August and 1 October 2019 (inclusive) based on the full single pay as you go fare. Anyone travelling on the line during these dates will be eligible for the refund - it will be issued for every full or part journey made on the route.

Can't really think of any reason to get off at any of the stops unless you needed to. Could go and watch Leyton Orient at home is the best I can suggest.

Its a nice trundle along what used to be a quiet north London backwater but from my recent experiences, the line is very busy. There isn't anything of interest to get off anywhere so I would just do it for haulage

Agreed, it doesn't go anywhere particularly attractive or worth visiting in its own right, but it's an interesting line to travel on if you haven't used it before.

A bit different to the days when you got a 104 every hour, and the stations were all vandalized and covered in weeds!

I'd get off at Gospel Oak and take a walk on Hampstead Heath. If you like pubs and/or real ale, one of my top ten London pubs, The Southampton Arms, is a 5/10 minute walk away. Also, The Dartmouth Arms is not too far away, still a good pub but a bit less cosy since they remodelled it.

Blackhorse Road is close to Walthamstow Wetlands nature reserve.

Crouch Hill is a good access point for the Parkland Walk nature reserve ie the footpath along the old Finsbury Park to Highgate railway line.

Not much else really.

Will I be guaranteed to get the new trains this weekend, or are they rolling them out slowly?

How does this offer actually work?

Obviously any journey solely between Gospel Oak and Barking including at intermediate stations is free.

If you travel from Hampstead Heath to Barking, where the off peak fare is £1.50 do you a) get refunded £1.50 as the fare from Gospel Oak to Barking or b) get no refund because the fare from Hampstead Heath to Gospel Oak is £1.50 and the refund is only for the additional cost of the Gospel Oak to Barking element.

If you make sufficient journeys on the Gospel Oak to Barking line at the start of the day to reach the daily cap, do you get refunded for a full 1-4 day cap even if you then travel all day in the rest of London.

Anyway, today's units from Gospel Oak

1520 710263
1535 710266
1550 710262
1605 710265
1620 710267
1635 710269

So as a worked example I travelled

1) Camden Road to South Tottenham (via pink reader at Gospel Oak) £1.50
2) South Tottenham to Barking £1.50
3) Barking to Woodgrange Park £1.50
4) Woodgrange Park to Victoria (via pink reader at Blackhorse Road) £2.80

There is presumably no question that journeys 2 and 3 will be refunded. Do I get anything refunded for journeys 1 and 4? I guess I find out in two weeks time.

Hi Jonathan; did you receive any refunds yet? I've also been trying a number of routes (since 2nd Sept) but seen no indication of any refunds yet, either in my TfL online account or on my credit card (I use a contactless card). It is quite frustrating not understanding how the refund system will work during this period!

No, not yet. It does seem very vague. They said two weeks before it came through, didn't they.

OK I have a refund, dated 6 September, but confusingly posted 14 September. I got £1.70 back for any journey that included any segment on the Goblin (I was travelling at peak times).

e.g. South Tottenham[Goblin]Wanstead Park[Out of Station Interchange]Forest Gate[TfL Rail]Stratford[Jubilee]Canary Wharf

Cost of this: £1.70, refund received: £1.70

Between the start of the free period until 6th September I had five journeys which included a segment on the Goblin. All of these commenced during peak time. Cost was 5x£1.70 and I received £8.50 (=5x£1.70)

Credit card statement shows:

06 Sep 19 TFL GOODWILL TFL.GOV.UK/CP -£8.50

Doing Business As
TRANSPORT FOR
SE10 0ES UNITED KINGDOM OF GB AND NI 0203.054.5306

Date Processed: 14 Sep 19

TfL online account shows:

06/09/2019 +£8.50*
*A refund was given for the following reason: Unplanned CPC Refund +£8.5

Still to be answered is how much you get back if your journey cost is more than the fare of the Goblin segment of the journey only.

So I got a refund email today but it only included 3 journeys from the same day, 2 full and one capped. From reading this would have expected refund for the 5 different journeys I’d done on the same day if they were done in batches.

Phoned the TFL OYSTERCARD helpdesk and First Lady was clueless. Saying this wasn’t for the GOBLIN refunds then said you only got refunds for each full journey you complete. Then said they don’t deal with it. Promised a call back from team leader.

Team leader also clueless stating as it was an automated process they had nothing to do with it and hence knew nothing about it but followed through the TFL guidance and my journey history and processed a gesture of goodwill refund for the 5 journeys. He also said that the stated refund would be there as well if I were to collect it but that’s from a nominated station that I no longer use anymore.

Very helpful team leader advised he would get information and issue a briefing to the contact centre to enable them to deal with queries as it seems the emails have started to go out with refund details over the last few days. Team leader hadn’t had any other queries regarding this.
