Heading North from Willington there is a line off to the right, a freight train was waiting there this morning.

It's easy enough to find the line on a map, it passes Castle Donington and comes out near Long Eaton. I'm not aware of an trains using the line. Is it freight only?

Only has booked freight but is used as a diversion route. A railtour went that way this morning.

Thank you Matt. Just out of interest what is the proper name of the line?

At one time the line also contained two junctions although everything had been plain lined by 1980 (apart from of course the power station which lasted a bit longer).

When derby was being re modelled the XC trains went that way, had a run out that way just for the hell of it, it’s not a fast line though being freight mainly it seems

The Castle Donington junction is still there to be used for the adjacent freight warehouses if they ever need a rail connection. Nearby there will be a junction for the rail freight terminal near East Midlands Airport - where trains to/from the east could use Castle Donington to run round.

Aren't some of the warehouses already connected? In other words the warehouses used by M & S?

Just looking at Bing aerial there appears to be a rail loading pad west of the big warehouse, but I can't say if it's used or just something they had to provide to get planning approval (meaning that at least it could be used if a potential tenant wanted to).

If I recall correctly Castle Donington rail connection was a huge failure. Its there to be used, but nobody signed up for it. What a waste.

I did a bit of lorry loading at M and S Castle Donninton a few Christmases ago, and I don't recall being asked to load a railway container or even any mention of them.

As far as I know it's a totally road based site

A landlord has no power to require tenants to use rail, and generally speaking a local planning authority can't require this either. By making planning permission conditional on providing a rail connection, at least that connection is there in the future and if there are enough around the country there is more chance of being able to set up a freight flow between two of them.

In recent months a new rail link has been put into the East Midlands Gateway complex by the A50/M1/A453 junction which follows the A50 to the complex. The website states that up to 16 trains a day can be accommodated at the rail terminal.

There is now track in place, at least in the area the loading pad will be (around the southern edge of that picture running north-south). A huge cutting has been excavated for those facilities, which are visible when driving northwards along the A453 from the A42 (Ashby Road in that image).

It was in the planning conditions, keeping as many HGVs off the roads as possible by using railfreight was the aim....planning passes, warehouse built, BUT M&S never had any intention of using rail
