I wonder which would be the least made ticket purchase between the following:

Derby to Peartree or Peartree to Derby?
I was on the 1642 once and a family got off at Peartree. Considering they has suitcase's I would assume the journey was a bit further than just Derby to Peatree.

During the last war when he was a soldier, my dad travelled from Castlewellan in the Six Counties to Margate: the ticket collector at Margate looked somewhat curiously at the ticket issued by the Belfast and County Down Railway.
In the spring I returned home on a Galway (CIV) to Appledore (Kent) sail rail ticket, the conductor on Marshlink said he'd never seen one before and would I mind if he took a photo of it so nothing much has changed!

Whyteleafe to Upper Warlingham?

In the 1980s I used to regularly travel to Brough (Humberside) which always had ticket office staff reaching for their manuals despite it being a well-served station. Swaythling to Brough was probably the most obscure.

Upon starting this thread, I never thought that there would be hundreds, if not thousands of station pairs that fall into this category. It would be interesting to take things one step further and find out if there are any pairs of stations that DO have a direct rail service between them.

If I'm interpreting the question correctly - "are there any two stations with a direct train between them where no-one has ever travelled between that particular pair", I'd say very probably yes.

On the Northern network, there have been some trains which follow weird and wonderful routes. There may be only one through train per day, which runs for the TOC's operational convenience, not because of any logical passenger flow. These trains can appear & disappear with each timetable iteration.

For example, a few years ago on Sundays Northern (the previous one) ran through trains between Southport and Chester via Bolton, Manchester & Stockport. This was mainly a convenient way to diagram the unit and crew (although intermediate journeys like Bolton to Stockport might be handy).

Obviously there will be some level of demand for travel between Southport & Chester, but almost everyone doing the end-to-end journey would use Merseyrail, changing in Liverpool.

On rare occasions, one or two unlucky passengers on a Sunday might have seen the final destination of the Northern train, thought "that's where I'm going" and jumped on for a ride the long way round.*

But what about some of the smaller shacks along the way? Has anyone ever travelled from Meols Cop to Delamere, or from Cuddington to Gathurst on one of these through trains? Unlikely - but you never know!

* - Tickets between Southport & Chester were routed "via Birkenhead" and, unusually, were not valid on the through trains (Any Permitted tickets not being available). So not only did you get to spend several hours on a Pacer, you had to pay extra for the privilege.

No-one can buy a ticket between Ash Vale and North Camp as no fare exists. Anyone know of any other pairs of stations in the same situation?

Ash Vale-Aldershot-Ash-North Camp I'd love to do when next at family in the area!

"Marston Vale mafia"
Well, the Penzance to Wick First Class Open Return, famously used in the media as an example of how expensive train tickets are, has equally famously never been sold.

I bet nobody has ever done Dolwyddelan or Kempston Hardwick to Altnabreac. And it's a bit pricey to buy it for a laugh.

That aside, I doubt anyone has ever done Burscough Bridge to Burscough Junction. There are fares (I guess you'd go via Preston and Wigan, they aren't outrageously priced, either), but it's about 10 minutes' walk.

Many years ago I would go Kempston Hardwick when the level crossing was manually operated. The Xings keeper would allow me and my mates to close the gates and work the signals from the small frame. On reflection he was using us as cheap labour but we didn't mind one bit.

I wonder how many other people have travelled from Lakenheath to Duncraig!:D

I know of someone who has been at Polesworth and Shippea Hill in the same day before now too.

Nothing like as exotic as your examples, but there is an early morning Spondon to Cardiff through service - presumably intended to allow overnight shift workers a way out of said settlement and a few locals a way into Derby and Birmingham. I suppose it must occasionally get Spondon - Cardiff and Newport passengers but I suspect eg Spondon - Chepstow ticket sales are a rare bird.
But who knows - perhaps any conductor-guards in here know better?

My most random was Whitley Bridge to Thurso. Certainly surprised the guard that one did!

I’m going with Wrexham Gen to Wrexham Central.

If you’d like to do it today, there’s a rail replacement bus that will charge you £1.50 and take 8 minutes.

I reckon I could moonwalk there faster.

Bordesley to Denton or Reddish South and vice versa.

Tickets exist but I don't think the journey can be done within single day.

Sixty years ago when I was a little boy my dad often took me on quirky rail journeys just for the hell of it. A popular one was from/to the two disjointed Bradford stations (Exchange & Forster square?). The modern equivalent on NRE suggests a price but then offers Shanks’ pony as transport.

It's utterly impossible to factually answer the question.

Given that the thread has changed subject somewhat, I'll offer my own odd tickets:
  • Coombe Junction Halt to St Budeaux Ferry Road
  • Tiverton Parkway to Ammanford
  • Buckenham to Berney Arms
  • Breich to Lanark
  • Tal-y-Cafn to North Llanrwst
  • Haymarket to Marske
  • Tonfanau to Edinburgh

I've boarded at Overpool and alighted at Dent (and return) on a through excursion.

I did Horton in Ribblesdale - Ribblehead the other week. I was surprised at the number of people waiting at horton - about 15 I think. And I saw some of them at Ribblehead on the platform. Some got on the bus going over Newby head, others went walking. Me. i walked back to Horton.

My own odd one is Roydon to Upper Halliford, which I did a few times around five years ago. I remember thinking at the time that not many people would ever have done that one before.

Nothing terribly weird about it, just two minor stations, the opposite side of London to each other, that are barely used outside of rush-hour.

Whyteleafe to Upper Warlingham?

Not knowing exactly what the OP was getting at, that would have been my suggestion. Along with Coulsdon Town to Coulsdon South, Waterloo to Waterloo East, King’s Cross to St. Pancras, Fenchurch Street to Liverpool Street, and West Hampstead Overground to West Hampstead Thameslink. To me it’s not that they’ve never been done, just that it’s plain stupid to even bother.

Fear not. When I’m back in the UK for Christmas (the family lives close to Coulsdon) I’ll knock off as many of those as I can, engineering works permitting.

Pontefract Baghill and Pontefract Monkhill. Less than a mile apart by foot yet over 40 miles by rail with two changes by either route, via Moorethorpe and Leeds or York and Leeds.

A journey that wouldnt have been made
Garston to Allerton
Now they are both Liverpool South Parkway. Garston station was moved the other side of the road bridge and combined. But they used to be on different networks. It was quicker easier and cheaper to walk from the one to the other especially as the sevice was hourly from Allerton to hunts cross then a 15 minute wait at Hunts cross back to Garston.
