Lack of travelling cleaners seems the main problem. Northern have cleaners during the daytime at some terminal points, I've seen them at Blackpool, Southport, Manchester Airport for example. Trouble is for example a train arrives at Manchester Airport from Barrow dirty bit the cleaner says they don't have enough time (when the 6 minute turnaround becomes 2) the train then goes to Windermere and does several trips to Oxenholme before returning to the airport all without being cleaned.

Why don't they have the cleaners travel back and forth between Picc and the Airport cleaning them on the move when they're fairly quiet?

The unfortunate side-effect of this being that you could also take the seat cover off and throw it out of the window.

On the slammers they used to lob out the whole cushion, so I suppose that's progress of sorts.

I've not seen this on any other TOC.

I've seen people complain about this fairly recently on SWR (SWT moquette) and on southeastern. All claim "no other TOC would accept this...". Admittedly those seats were grim for a recently refurbished train but there's always another TOC that will be similar

Essentially comes down to:

Many people are dirty b*ggers and don't care. Personally I'd bring back capital punishment for them, although that might be a tad extreme ;)

Seat designs not being modular with lockable but quick release components enabling removal and replacement. Ideally, seats would be standardised to simply this.

Poor choice of covers. Moquette is hard wearing albeit as already mentioned, will be just as dirty but hides it well. Wipe clean surfaces or even hard plastic seating as seen on some buses would work. Wouldn't be as comfortable but would stand up to wear and soiling.

You could perhaps have the same seat design that accepts both a moquette cushion and a hard plastic base. Any routes being frequently soiled could have their seats swapped out to prevent further occurrences. In other words, only target routes with hard seating when necessary.

Hell, turn the interiors into wet rooms and jet wash them. Might as well do it while certain passengers are aboard... ;)

I'm on an ex-Scotrail train now, the 0917 Leeds-Carlisle, and their 158's seen in far better condition. The ex-GWR 153 I travelled from Wakefield Kirkgate-Huddersfield yesterday teatime was also in good nick. Surely then a lot of the blame must lie with Northern and their lack of cleaning, maintenance and general care.

As for cleaners, well this train was done and the Harrogate before it. I've just seen a new EMU heading for Doncaster pulling out of Leeds, and I noticed 3 empty tables with coffee cups on. Why are some cleaned and others not? Travelling cleaners between Leeds and Wakefield Westgate could be an idea. I also noticed the Leeds-Nottingham trains don't get touched in Nottingham. It seems there's no consistency.

Actually I got on a Nottm - Leeds service a few sundays ago and a chap came through and litter picked, but generally I agree they don't get touched in my experience (picking up litter on the table I want to sit at being my 1st task of the journey!)

I agree - Northern's cleaning regime seems esp poor to me, and presumably not funded properly. Though the seats you pictured are beyond end of trip litter pick type cleaning - should have been sorted overnight as you say.

Despite DfT's tendency to micro manage, it never seems that they micro manage cleaning standards!

In fact if I was trying to implement Corbyn's 'renationalisation' pledge I'd look at what the franchise agreement said about cleaning standards and employ an army of inspectors out and about each day checking it. I'm pretty sure that a lot of franchises would fairly soon be 'handing back the keys' as they would have to to significantly up the resources dedicated to cleaning, and I doubt they have budgeted for it!

There was a lass based at Nottingham for years basically employed to clean the Northern train - now I think of it I've not seen her for a while so I wonder if the position is still there. I shall enquire!

I have been on Merseyrail a lot recently (and am right now) and the trains, despite their age, have been at worst a tiny bit dirty but generally great. The seats in particular stand out as very clean. They have an older refurb than Northern and arguably harder duties. Same territory as Northern. Clearly Northern are just not up to scratch in terms of materials regimes and cleaning regimes.

Northern services have been filthy for years. Merseyrail do make people think twice about breaking byelaws which has worked well but they have clearly also used better materials and have some pride in how they turn out their fleet. Trains get dirty for a host of reasons - it is no good just blaming passengers.

If anybody from Merseyrail is reading this - cheers, your efforts are really appreciated.

Southerns seats on 313s are appalling thanks in part to the cheap sandpaper covers. The 377s are at least looked after fairly well

In fact I can't stand the trains they are an embarrassment with no toilets and horrid seating on long Brighton to Portsmouth journeys
