It also prevents, when the doors are opening and closing to maintain temperature, risking the doors being reopened when half-closed by someone attempting to board, finding the step half-retracted and missing their footing. It's the only sensible way to do it really.
But if the doors and steps were to retract, then the step is usually first to emerge and when it has, the doors then open. Similarly the step does not seem to retract until the doors are closed. So there is no risk the doors open and the step being half out/ retracted.

Anyway, how did the 755's fare today. Reports that 11 Norwich to Great Yarmouth services were cancelled due to a train fault?

Looks like an issue with a coach on the short set, which prevented it entering service.

But if the doors and steps were to retract, then the step is usually first to emerge and when it has, the doors then open. Similarly the step does not seem to retract until the doors are closed. So there is no risk the doors open and the step being half out/ retracted.
But it slows down reopening the doors (because you'd have to wait for the step to come out). And would increase wear on the step (which already gets a lot of abuse because of people stepping on it all the time).

For terminus stations where the train might sit for quite some time, with passengers boarding at disjoint times, keeping the steps out makes perfect sense. For intermediate stops it might be less of an issue, but surely you want to minimise the amount of delays in opening a door if a late passenger comes running, hence you might as well keep them out until departure. Hard to see any good reason to retract prior to departure to be honest.

Mind you, at least on the SBB units, the step doesn't get extended until the door is opened by someone - so if a door doesn't get used at all the step also won't be extended at all. But once it's been extended once, it stays extended until departure.

Same behaviour in the 755.

I was at Great Yarmouth for the 11.17 to Norwich, this morning, which was canceled, and a Rail Replacement Coach was due to take all the passengers, I declined to travel (it was a leisure journey), but a lot of people with luggage and buggies would be left behind.
The short set was out, I understand it formed the 07.47 from Lowestoft, but still cancelations, big posters in the town 'Our new Trains are Here', but the full introduction of the 755's can't come quick enough...

Have there been any reported delays due to "overcrowding" (railway language for too many people trying to board or alight at the same door) yet?

An Ipswich to Cambridge and return (Q) workings for the early hours has appeared on RTT:

https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/F27358/2019/09/09/advanced
https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/F27364/2019/09/10/advanced

Hopefully we will now see some testing on the Ipswich rural routes.
Looking forward to seeing the 755s on these routes. Am currently on the 1405 to Lowestoft which is formed of a 755 and they have updated the PIS again, there is another annoying BTP message reminding you to remember your 3 S's.

I'm getting that after every stop on this Azuma. Crazes me keep hearing it. Far too many safety announcements these days. People just switch off.

People just switch off, but you can't help hearing it? Which one is it?

See it say it sorted, CCTV for your safety & security. Probably seems worse as I'm on a York starter with lots of stops. Would be far too much on a Stadler on a local route if they keep doing that.

I'm always happy when I get on a train and the PIS isn't working for whatever reason. Nice to not have to listen to a list of calling points and security nonsense every few minutes.

Haven't tried an Azuma yet, but have seen from others videos of it the amount of safety announcements. I believe all operators have to do it. Was nice on the 2nd part of the journey I was on as luckily the PIS code for Cambridge from Norwich was not put in so no messages. However from a previous journey when it was working the messages played at Thetford, Ely, Cambridge North and Cambridge on that route. Presumably on the Stadler it is set to play the messages at the bigger stations.

Let's hope so. I've only been from Norwich to Brundall on one twice & only in that direction mate.

I have been all the way before and it only played the announcement on leaving Norwich and arriving at Great Yarmouth.

As far as I recall, the locations for those messages to be played are fixed aren't they? Presumably as the stops are so far apart, the Azumas are programmed to do it at every station. On the local TfL Rail route I use, they play at 2-3 particular locations on a 40 minute journey. I guess the aim is for the message to be played at a 15-20 minute frequency. That'd be pretty grating for a 6 hour long-distance journey...

Until recently seeing it on a display, that is what I thought it was! Train speakers are not very clear.
Moving on from See it, Say it, Sorted. There is another test run to Sheringham tonight into the early hours arriving at Sheringham at 0055 and departing at 0100 working as 5Q89 and 5Q90.

On 755418 this morning and guard is doing the door opening and closing. Looks like the camera problems continue on this unit, but at least common sense prevails and it's not resulted in cancellation of the service.

It looked like a another delivery of 3 X 755/3's through Colchester just now. Must be getting close to the end of the deliveries for the 755's now.
