It was a 9-car bi-mode with a 9-car electric going to Eastleigh. Clearly diesel is needed for the later part of the journey - hence why they use 800/1s as tractor units for this purpose.
Presumably there is some restriction that a 800 can't switch from electric to diesel on the move if it is working with / towing a 801.
