Removal of Underground travelcards to Watford Junction etc

The latest edition of T&R released via FOI says that from last Sunday (8th) the paper day travelcards issued for zones 1-9A (Watford Junction), 1-9B (Hertford East) and 1-9C (Shenfield) have been withdrawn. This removes the confusion between LU issued travelcards and NR issued travelcards where the former had greater validity.

Shame, but as TfL swore blind to me in a FOI request that these tickets didn't exist, it's not a massive surprise.

I would imagine the sales of the Hertford East travelcard would have been limited, as would the Shenfield travelcard [other than to bashers wanting decent trips on 321s/360s!]

I presume this applies both to Travelcards bought from stations in Zone 9 and to those issued at stations within Zones 1-8 for travel to Zone 9?

The TfL fare table at http://content.tfl.gov.uk/adult-fares-2019.pdf appears to suggest that paper Travelcards are still available from Zone 9 stations, but presumably that hasn't been updated yet.

As this fare table shows Travelcard prices for Zones 1-7 and 1-8 as being the same as for 1-9 (£13.90 off-peak, £23.50 Anytime) I presume this means that paper Travelcards are no longer available from Zone 7 and Zone 8 stations.

I guess this means that passengers from Zone 7, 8 and 9 stations can no longer buy a paper Travelcard, but passengers from stations outside the Travelcard area or from within Zones 1-6 still can at least for now.

The original post specifically refers to stations which are outside of zone 9, and does not suggest the changes you suggest. Therefore I think you are completely wrong.

Sorry, yes, I misunderstood. However, I presume this still means that passengers from other stations outside the zonal area where Oyster is not accepted (such as stations north of Watford Junction or east of Shenfield) can still buy a paper One Day Travelcard, but passengers from Hertford East, Shenfield and Watford Junction can no longer do so.

I presume the withdrawal of paper Travelcards also applies to Ware, St Margarets (Herts), Rye House and Broxbourne, which are also outside the zonal area.

I guess this also means that railcard holders from the affected stations can no longer buy a discounted One Day Travelcard (although this was not available to Network Railcard holders on weekdays anyway because of the minimum fare) if they hold a railcard that can't be added to an Oyster card such as a Network Railcard (or if they don't have an Oyster card, as a railcard discount can't be added to a contactless bank card).

No, it doesn't mean that - WFJ still has an outboundary Travelcard (fare set by LNR) and I doubt would lose it.

I expect it'll lose the "AAA London Zones 1-9" bit though, so will revert to allowing only one journey to/from the zone 6 boundary.

As you say, other outboundary Travelcards are not affected.

Using Hertford East as an example I believe the following Travelcards, which are National Rail issued still remain:

Hertford Stations - London Zones 1-6
Hertford East - London Zones 1-6 (AAA Zones 7-9)

So you can still get paper Travelcards covering all Zones unless I’m missing something, just that you can’t buy them from LU.

ISTR there is a slight difference in validity between a National Rail issued Watford Junction - London Zones 1-6 (AAA Zones 7-9) paper Travelcard and the LU paper equivalent, as Watford Junction is outside Zone 9 and the National Rail version only allows one return journey between Watford Junction and Zone 9 whereas the LU version allows unlimited journeys.

So not a massive problem then, except the minor loss of the unlimited validity from Watford Junction and the first zone 9 station. Same issue at Shenfield as well, I assume.

Anyone wanting one of these travelcards will need to purchase from a National Rail station, choosing an appropriate origin or purchase online and collect vis ToD.

I presume the same also applies to Shenfield, which (according to the National Rail website) is managed by Greater Anglia but also served by TfL Rail (soon to become Crossrail, or Elizabath Line)?

Yes, same situation at Shenfield as at Watford Junction.

Paper Travelcards from Shenfield - London Zones 1-6 (AAA Zones 7-9) are still available.
