Hi All

Just wondering if anyone can give me a bit of advice regarding either delay repay/refunds and what I am entitled to and who I should claim from.

I was travelling from Birmingham-Huddersfield for a day trip. I booked the following:

Birmingham-Derby Advance Singles in each direction
Derby-Chapeltown Off Peak Day Return
Chapeltown-Huddersfield (not Via Leeds) Off Peak Day Return with PlusBus

All tickets were booked from the CrossCountry website.

I travelled as far as Sheffield on CrossCountry where I needed to on to a Northern Train, which only runs hourly. The train I intended to catch from Sheffield was first delayed and eventually got cancelled, waited for the next train, which then got delayed and then was only going to Barnsley. The train after that was also cancelled. I therefore abandoned my journey in Sheffield and returned back from there later.

I used the Birmingham-Derby tickets. I used part of the Derby-Chapeltown tickets as far as Sheffield. I hadn't completed this journey as I didn't get as far as Chapeltown. I didn't use the Chapeltown-Huddersfield or the PlusBus.

Many Thanks
Kel

It sounds like you should make a refund claim to me, for returning to your origin in place of continuing to your destination, as a result of train cancellations.

I would write to the original retailer enclosing all of your tickets and explaining the level of disruption which you faced. Ask for the tickets to be refunded.

I feel you are quite likely to meet with some resistance, but if you do you can quote NRCoT Condition 30. If this isn't enough, you may take your case to the Rail Ombudsman.

If the OP went to Sheffield and did something worthwhile there, I think it would be morally right to only ask for a full refund of the final ticket without an admin fee. But if there was no other reason to be in Sheffield apart from the disruption preventing travel to Huddersfield, then I would want all tickets to be refunded in full.

A CDR from Derby to Chapeltown is the same price as Derby to Sheffield, although if the OP had only wanted to travel to Sheffield they may have purchased a different combination of tickets.

I’m not sure a full refund is appropriate as the OP states they returned from Sheffield “later”. This does not suggest a completely abandoned journey and I would therefore suggest that a partial refund is more applicable, although it is not at all clear how this might be calculated.

This seems reasonable, but an abandoned journey does not have a formal definition so I argue the OP may well be entitled to claim a full refund of all portions.
