Thanks for the info! I was going to speculate about the Mendip contract, but thought 59's and 66's would be used for this contract!
It seems the idea is to use 66/6s for that, but they will need to be taken off other services and the 70s may be used to replace them on those other services.

When I went by a couple of weeks ago I counted seven in the line. No numbers, I'm not that quick.

70's are spreading their wings quite a lot now. Numerous workings out of Tunstead and Earles, as well as appearances on the Bredbury binliner. Reports of them dropping onto departmental workings from Doncaster and Basford Hall to Toton as well.

Was reported earlier this week that 009 was moved from the 'storage line' in readiness to be moved inside for repairs. So that will be another back out soon enough.

Wasn't the original plan to bring the 70s back for the Mendip work? Guessing that never happened and they've replaced 66s on other workings instead. Nice to see them hauling heavier stuff instead of just working intermodals. I do wonder whether the 70s have been given a new lease of life in readiness for HS2 work?

The last few days I've seen a light Class 70 (a different number every night) pass Woodlesford around 16:50 presume heading home to Leeds, with a number of crew on board, driver training? HS2 work would be an obvious choice for the 70's real heavy haul work

They had a couple of trial runs on the Mendip traffic, and they coped absolutely fine, but in the end FL decided the 66/6s were a safer bet.

70009 for the last week has been heading the stored line 1 at Leeds, it's movements didn't seem to last long, it now brings line 1 back up to 5 units as I reported the other 4 on Feb 20th

Crazy to think some of the company's newest locos haven't turned a wheel in anger for over 3 years now

Wow... does that imply that 012 is the only one not in storage?

70012 was the one dropped on delivery and never entered service with Freightliner. So currently all of Freightliner's 70s are stored

012 is - famously - not part of the Freightliner fleet. It was dropped while being lifted off the ship during delivery and badly damaged. It was returned to GE. All Freightliner 70s are currently stored.
