Hello,

Tomorrow I will travel to from Cambridge to Norbury but I will stop into London to visit Buckingham Palace.

Checking on the Gwr, with the option to go to from Victoria to Norbury, I get a single fare at £13.20 per journey. This fare is the same one that I would get if I was to take the train from London St Pancras to Norbury.

Is this correct? Does this fare include a trip on the underground because it says "Via any permitted route"?

Thanks!

If you want to use travel from Cambridge to London and then use London Underground, and also travel to Norbury by bus or National Rail services, it sounds to make like a Cambridge Travelcard would be a good option for you?

At weekends, this is available at £19.10 (Super Off Peak Day Travelcard) for use on Greater Anglia services only from Cambridge and £24.60 for use on Thaneslink as well.

This includes unlimited travel within London Zones 1-6, as well as a return journey from Cambridge to the outer boundary. The Greater Anglia only option is remarkable value for money.

Thanks, I can't seem to find this option anywhere. Where did you see this travelcard at £19.10?

The OP does not mention returning the same day, or doing any other journeys.

£13.20 must be a Super Offpeak Single with Railcard discount, as I can't find any other fare at such a low price.
It is valid + Any Permitted, the + means it can be used for ONE Underground journey to connect across London, for example from Kings Cross to Victoria.

So the answer to the OP is "yes" - they can use it as they describe.

(They could also get off the tube at Green Park and walk to the Palace from there (it's a nicer walk) but they'd then have to walk to Victoria).

...and on Great Northern services.

GN branded services are operated by [Govia] Thameslink; it's all the same train company (confusingly they use multiple brand names)

You can see it here:

http://www.brfares.com/#faredetail?orig=CBG&dest=NRB&grpd=0035&rte=20&tkt=SO0

It should be available from all good retailers. But it's only available at weekends.

True, but if the OP is prepared to take trains operated by Greater Anglia (and avoid those operated by GTR), it's cheaper to buy a Travelcard than a single to Norbury, even if no other journeys are made.

Yes, I know, but from the ordinary passenger perspective the services are branded Great Northern and consequently are shown on the departure screens and in online timetables as 'Great Northern'.

Agreed, and it's valid on Mondays-Fridays only, and yes with a Railcard discount.

Sorry, hadn't spotted the GA only option, as you says it's slightly cheaper - but for the OP's journey would be an hour or so longer!
Think the Super Offpeaks are weekend only - but as the OP says they are travelling today, that's OK.

That is £16.25 if you use a Network railcard.

If you search for a ticket from Cambridge to London, you may only get itineraries via Kings Cross, which will be more expensive. If you search for tickets via Tottenham Hale, then you will get the Greater Anglia-only tickets. The railcard gives you a 1/3rd discount on the train bit (£8.60), but not the Travelcard.

There is also a ticket listed for £12.60
http://www.brfares.com/#faredetail?orig=CBG&dest=LST&grpd=0035&rlc=NEW&rte=20&tkt=SO0
but it has a restriction that from Sat 14 Sep 2019 until further notice on every day, its not valid "to depart any location at any time on any TOC", so you can't buy one.

I've taken a detailed look at this and actually it is available. Although it is true to say that restriction code 'FA' bars all trains at any time, this restriction only actually applies Mondays-Fridays. So the restriction code is not applicable today, meaning any train can be caught (subject to the TOC restriction outwith Zones 1-6, of course). I have tested this on a couple of booking sites and it is being sold for today and that is definitely correct.

There are Super Off Peak products which are only valid Mondays-Fridays (e.g. in Scotland where I was a couple of weeks ago), some which are valid only at weekends, and some valid any day. The name is an umbrella term used to describe lots of different products, which used to have names which indicated their validity. So you can't just look at the name and determine when it's valid.

Interesting.

I tried and failed to buy the £12.60 Cambridge-Liverpool Street and Zone 1-6 Travelcard ticket at www.greateranglia.co.uk www.chilternrailways.co.uk www.thetrainline.com www.splitticketing.com and www.lner.co.uk

It is listed at www.trainpal.co.uk

Which other sites list it?

www.splitticketing.com (which is a more expensive version of trainsplit.com) shows it for me when searching for a return journey from Cambridge to Hither Green. It only shows the cheapest available fares so won't show it if there is a cheaper point-to-point return fare available, e.g. if you search only to Liverpool Street.

I agree with you that www.greateranglia.co.uk (which is a cheaper version of thetrainline.com) does not show it at all. That is certainly very strange; I wonder is it getting confused by the three different types of Super Off-Peak Day Travelcards that are valid on that route at weekends?
