If the DC motors need overhauling anyway, then it doesn't matter how long the AC package will serve for, it's essentially just routine maintenance.

Not sure I understand this. The choice would be between overhauling the DC motor, or replacing it with an AC motor but also replacing the traction package.

The effort is fairly similar, that's how the SWT ones are justified.

Any news about future of this fleet? They have painfully slow acceleration, absolutely not fit for metro use...

Can the Southern 455s be retractioned like the SWR ones?
Yes but why would they need to? It would be much easier to act quickly and just take the SWR fleet instead as they go offlease.

From earlier discussions, retractioning was only justified on the SWT trains by them having 10 years left in service, and reducing maintenance activities at Wimbledon to fit the 707s in. Neither of those justifications would necessarily be relevant to SN’s 455s.

London Overground should be taking over all the franchises' metro services and then the fleets on SWR, Sthn and SE could be replaced with a homogeneous fleet.

Then SWR will already have an LO compatible Aventra fleet, so only SN and SE to sort out...
