Sampled the new stock today by lucky chance from Vic to LIme St this evening - really impressed, worth the wait. Are the trains too long for Lea Green? Hadn’t heard that before. The whole of rear Coach A was off the platform with no passenger announcement (unless it was just played in Coach A, we were in coach B).

Finally managed to see one of the new services today, and if I'd hung around in Leeds a bit longer I could've had a ride. Despite living on the route, until it ran through Huddersfield just as I was climbing the subway stairs I hadn't actually seen one other than test-runs.

1E51 terminated at MCV last night due to no guard being available however the set continued as 5E51 to York and returned to Manchester Piccadilly as 5P98 so that the driver(s) could get more hours in.

Sun 15/09
68026/TP11 (loco on Scarborough end) currently working 1E29 08:56 LIV-SCA then planned to work the rest of the diagram -
1F66 12.41 SCA-LIV
1E43 15.52 LIV-SCA
1F80 19.44 SCA-LIV

Apologies if this has already been posted, but does anyone have any info as to what the sets will be running next week?

Thank you in advance :)

No official info but 5E23 is shown as booked from Longsight all week, so the diagram that starts with 1E23 05:56 LIV-SCA looks favourite. (5F48 which then works 1F48/1E25 06:56 LIV-SCA is shown as starting from Ardwick). Things can, of course, change at short notice:)

Both are from Longsight the following week, which fits nicely with two diagrams starting from 23/09/2019, a date quoted earlier in the thread.

Not official info, just from a nosey trainspotter;)

They are very noisy! Whilst many of us welcome the return of Deltic/Class 37 type traction and noise (including me) surely in this day and age this is not acceptable. I can see people in various locations complaining bitterly, especially in the early morning (Scarborough!)
Hallo - what was that someone just said about the advantages of electrification!!!?

I hate to use the term but “snowflakes” comes to mind. Only in the U.K. would this be an issue.

Wandering off topic briefly - in Germany the 218s were removed from Glauburg-Stockheim route due to complaints about noise. Back on topic looking forward to riding on one of these soon, hopefully when a couple more sets are in traffic.

Edit - Now been reinstated to run from Liverpool as booked.

Monday 16/09 1E23 05:56 Liverpool - Scarborough shown to be starting from Manchester Victoria due to a shortage of train crew.

As said, this sort of thing has been an issue elsewhere, but I don’t think there’s a bigger difference between 68s and 185s than there was between 185s and 158s, and certainly no worse than freight trains, which most of the route already sees. In Scarborough they see noisier and dirtier locos on a semi-regular basis as it is.

Seat reservations and coloured indicators now fully operational. The time on the PIS showing the correct time. Automated announcements now work correctly, no cutting off on the final station. A nice touch for the station announcements is the audio matching the scroll of the screen.

If it sounds like a noise you're in the wrong place. It should be described as sweet music.
Agreed:)

In addition, I think the noise is probably no worse than a Class 91 with the fans on full, electric traction isn’t always quiet;)

Finally caught up with the set today whilst out travelling with a friend

First impressions were pretty good - very odd gliding through some of my local stations in something quieter than a 185!

We presumed the reservation system wasn’t functional as there were paper tickets in various seatbacks, but we were in coach C which had nothing, presumably unreserved

Seat/window alignment is poor, as has been mentioned before. Ride in the middle of the coach is fine but over the bogies is very bouncy, found when I went for a wander to find the facilities (speaking of which the sink water was initially just constantly running in the one I used and the toilet flush button just got stuck flashing after depositing its water but wasn’t clearing the pan - goodness knows why!). It also seems these trains buck the trend of seemingly manually locks on the non-accessible facilities as this one has an electronic one. Slightly odd single seat at one end of the coach too but with two tray tables in front!

I don’t get the obsession now with having the power sockets under the seats (common to lots of new stock including 385’s and the Azuma) as they are hard to locate - another passenger was overheard saying they were disappointed with the lack of power. The aforementioned units have stickers pointing out the power sockets but they are not on the Mk5 (to be honest, the stickers are a solution to a problem that shouldn't exist, but I digress)

I’m not sure what happened to the set as we arrived at Huddersfield p1 from Leeds only a couple of mins down, but was on a red. The Picc stopper then went out as did an Airport which was routed round through Hudd p4 before the 68 went, about 10L (I saw it was 17L by Stalybridge)

The 68 sounded wonderful as it pulled out of Huddersfield!

Look forward to getting a longer run on one in due course to get a better idea of comfort of the seats (the headrests are pretty solid, 15 mins isn’t much time to get a feel for much else really).

One thing I am sure of is that the leadings on the train would have been more cosy on a 185 whilst the Mk 5 had plenty space so the longer sets will undoubtedly be welcomed by passengers

So many new trains have this, it is such an impractical place to have them...

I do agree they are a pain to get at but i presume the thinking behind it is that both passengers on a pair of seats can access it rather than on the wall where only 1 can without disturbing the other

It also means they can shift the seats around without having to strip and re-wire the walls doesn't it?

Nothing wrong with having it on the seat in front though...

Does mean you have to unplug to get out of the aisle seat, though (or risk tripping over).

Under the seat you're sitting in does seem a sensible location to me - you just need a sign pointing it out.

Had to do that on a northern 195 , i had my phone plugged in and i was in the aisle . Much easier to plug in when theres no one next to you and a table is suited for resting your phone.

Cheers mate. I was thinking is was on the service after (13:56). Would really have messed up my day if I'd gone for that one. Ha ha.

Just a pain with 2 sockets for a seat of 4...however there are USB sockets but unless you look for them, they're not easy to find.

Had a trip on the mark 5s today was generally impressed. I was in the DT with the airline Seats with a decent window view.
One thing I noticed was the buttons for the internal doors and the lock on the manual toilet door are both not that obvious to find
Generally they are good though.

This evening’s 1E51 cancelled between Manchester Victoria and Scarborough and 1P98 22:46 Scarborough-Manchester Piccadilly cancelled throughout.

TPE JourneyCheck advises ‘This is due to a shortage of train crew’.

A bus is being provided Scarborough to York but from there:

‘Customers who are travelling onward from York towards Manchester Piccadilly are advised to catch the next available Transpennine Express service to their destination which will be departing York at 01:38.’

So, just the two hour delay in departure!
