Hi. 24 2-car class 456 were used by Southern before transferring to SouthWestern. Were these units allocated for the particular routes or they could run on any Metro services? If my memory is well 1 or 2x456 operated on London Bridge to Victoria via Denmark Hill services prior the Overground.
Were there multiply workings as 455+456 (2x455+456) like SWR does now?

455 and 456 worked together but never more than 8-car - The following combinations were all timetabled. 456s ran almost over almost all of the metro routes.

456
456+456
455
455+456
456+456+456
455+456+456
455+455

You are right that single 456s did work the South London Line but even on that line 455s did some of the workings.

Original plan was for 456/0 to be allocated to Wimbledon for southwestern division

However the South Central wanted rid of their EPB Fleet, and 456 fitted the bill perfectly.

so 456 went to Selhurst and this allowed the 416/3' and the remaining 415's to be culled from the inner suburban jobs,

the delay of introduction of the Squadron to teh Central was due to DOO Issues, which resulted in additional work done at Strawberry Hill being carried out to make them DOO operational

However IF they had been sent to the western as originally planned, then squadron introduction would have been a doddle as the western still uses guards on all services even today.....
