Hi all,

I've got to go to London on Thursday for a work related course and I'm booking the ticket through travel line but had a query. The location of the training is right by Waterloo East station so I would be getting the train there, but the returning route is showing that getting the underground to Kings Cross and catching the train from St Pancras would be quicker.

Just wondering if getting a ticket to Waterloo East and purchasing an Anytime Day Travelcard would then allow me to return from St Pancras instead of Waterloo East. Here's the description of the ticket:

OUTThu 19 Sep
Canterbury West to London Waterloo East

RETURN15:13 (Thu 19 Sep)
London Waterloo East to Canterbury West
  • You’ve selected the 06:01 and 15:13, but you can travel on any eligible train.
  • Same day return travel including unlimited bus, tube, tram and DLR journeys around London.
  • In addition to the normal permitted routes, this ticket is also valid for travel on Southeastern high speed services.
Thanks for any help!

The ticket is valid via High Speed 1 into St Pancras.

If the ticket is issued to "ZONE U1* LONDN" then it includes one tube transfer each way.

If the ticket is issued to "London Zones 1-6" it is a Travelcard, valid for unlimited travel on most public transport within the relevant London Zones.

Based on the second bullet point above, it sounds like you have been issued with a Travelcard.

So based off of that I would be able to to use the ticket to Waterloo and then later get a tube to St Pancras and return from there? Thanks

Based on the bullet points above, yes. And any other journeys you want to do in London (if any).

If you can confirm the ticket type, destination printed on the ticket, and price paid, then we can be more certain.

A Travelcard might not be necessary.

A ticket from Canterbury to London Terminals routed ‘plus High Speed’ is also valid to cross London from St Pancras to Farringdon, City Thameslink, Blackfriars, London Bridge or London Bridge using Thameslink services.

The southern entrance at Blackfriars is very close to Waterloo East.

I've got to buy the ticket myself so I don't want to purchase one that will end up being invalid for what I want. Put in Canterbury West to Waterloo East, same day return and the option that gave the above bulletpoints was an Anytime Day Travelcard for £78.90, basically the most expensive option.

The word Travelcard says that it is entirely valid to travel around London as much as you please between arriving from Canterbury and departing back to Canterbury. The Canterbury travel can use any South London terminal or St Pancras.

If it was me I'd buy an Anytime Day Return (SDR) routed "Not via HS1" for £60.80 and a HS Upgrade Single for the relevant leg, priced at £6.30, and use Contactless/Oyster PAYG to get from Waterloo to St Pancras by tube (changing at Oxford Circus).

It may be that your employer would prefer you to pay a higher fare in order to keep things simple, and reimburse you the greater amount. I'd check with them if in doubt.

As someone who uses both the high speed line and the classic line, I would take the direct train from Canterbury West to Waterloo East. 1 hour 40 minutes is longer than 55 minutes, but hear me out:

After taking the underground or Thameslink from St Pancras back downwards again to London Bridge or Waterloo which takes 20/30 minutes at best in peak time, you only save around 20 minutes and even less time if travelling further South.

Of course the choice is yours, but personally I would not bother with the hassle of getting the tube if I were you.

It's also valid to travel to London Cannon Street, London Charing Cross and London Waterloo East. Easement 700847 gives the full details.

That said, with changing at Pancras and London Bridge, you save less than 5 minutes compared to catching the direct non-HS1 train. This time includes around 20 minutes travelling from Blackfriars to Waterloo East.

You'd be better off walking from Blackfriars to Waterloo East. Always a delight to walk down Roupell Street

The little knot of streets that make up the Roupell Street Conservation Area are as close as it is possible to get, in this day and age, to slipping back into 19th century London.

Personally for your chosen route I'd buy a Canterbury Stns to St Albans City Route "+Any Permitted" Anytime Day Return Ticket at £63.70 but you might have difficulty explaining your expenses.
My choice of route would be SE Mainline both ways, forget about HS for Waterloo. On the return get the first fast service to Ashford or Sevenoaks. Don't assume that Hastings services will stop somewhere you can change. If you're happy with the mainline buy a Canterbury Stations to Paddock Wood ADR at £18.80 and a Paddock Wood to London terminals ADR at £34.80 total £53.60. All trains (bar one off peak down service) stop at Paddock Wood.

The walk to from Blackfriars was not too bad back in the days when London Bridge had no Thameslink trains. Today if you have any luggage or it’s raining then it is much more convenient to stay on to London Bridge and then change platform for train to Waterloo East
