5x 2 car 230s.... personally don’t think they should have gone for 2 car trains.

Yeah, I'd have gone for 3s but not doubling up.

5 units implies some services may be doubled up, and currently on busy trains they have an assisting guard, so could it be that you’ll have a guard in one 2 coach, and an assisting guard doing revenue on the other?

I'd draw no such conclusions at this time. It may be giving the IoW stock its own class number is simply to keep it 'segregated' from the mainland.

I've found two newspaper articles - one suggests battery and one suggests third rail. Both seem to mention a Brading loop which if true is good news. I can't however see any kind of official press release, neither from the DfT, Vivarail or SWR - is there one?

2xx means DEMU, doesn't it? A battery-only EMU would surely go in one of 3xx, 4xx, 5xx anyway?
4xx defines it as DC third rail in the current group standard class definitions, battery if fitted can only really be a side issue.
A theoretical diesel battery hybrid ought to be in range 750-799.

KILF's announcement (on Facebook) seems to confirm they will indeed be sticking with the third rail, and confirms the construction of Brading loop to allow a half-hourly service. Good news all round I think. Given that the main reliability issues with 230s relate to diesel engines/gensets, these should be reasonably reliable, I'd think, and the existing layout should be just fine given the Tube stock already used.

Will be glad to see the third rail kept.
I think over the last couple of years of this thread its likely demise has been exaggerated by people keen to see something different just for the sake of it.

So, a year to get myself on a day trip to the Isle of Wight in order to have a ride on the 1938 stock before it's too late. Need to get some hours in to keep my PPL valid so the first suitable weather window and I'll be taking the day off work and on my way to Sandown or Bembridge.

The way it's going it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't last a year...they are falling to bits.

Anyone know how Brading loop will be accessible? I can’t see a Penryn type set up, and I thought barrow crossings weren’t permitted anymore? Unless the new down side platform will not be step free?

The press releases are quoting £26 million all in, so accessibility might be included?

My main problem with a 2 car over 3 is that a larger proportion of the train is lost to the accessible area, which I was hoping would be quite generous for all the bikes, buggies etc. However 2 car does mean they can be doubled up. 4 units in service one spare

Be good if Wightlink provided a half hourly catamaran service throughout the day to match, but I very much doubt it
