Hi everyone,

This summer a member of staff at Huddersfield railway station told me that the above could not be used during the evening peak. This was news to me but can anyone confirm whether this is correct?

Thanks for reading this.

Sounds like somebody making up rules as they go along, from NRE

Thanks very much for your response. I stood my ground and they let me through the barriers without asking me to pay any extra money. They then said "the rules are very complicated aren't they".

Unfortunately from my experience a disappointing number of staff in Yorkshire think the evening peak restrictions on local tickets apply to more tickets and a greater area than they actually do.

Just to confirm as others have said. It’s perfectly valid. What you’ve encountered is a member of staff who has either not been trained in ticketing or has ignored training in ticketing because they think they know it all already. Sadly there seems to be an increasing number of them. I’ve been through HUD on one of those tickets at that time and never encountered a problem (they don’t work the barriers at HUD at any time forcing a manual check and the rejection likely sets the mood for the upcoming discussion).

Or who has forgotten. Never underestimate the ability of humans to forget.

And let's face it, there's more than a few products with widely varying rules to remember... ;)

Reading back, might be worth clarifying that I am (genuinely) impressed that front line rail folk can remember as many of the various products and restrictions as they do purely from memory. Seems it’s like the London black cab knowledge, but possibly harder...

I am not so sure. I have had various rover tickets accepted where they were not valid, but where they might be expected to be valid (just to be clear I always held the correct tickets before boarding any trains from a station with appropriate facilities, but showed the rover to see if it would be accepted).

Also several TPE guards chose to look things up on their devices as they admitted they were not sure, but to be fair you might not expect the North West Rover to be valid at Leeds, and the Coast and Peaks Rover doesn't really tell you where it is valid except in a very general sense.

Forgetting something is more than acceptable. There is so much to know and remember. We should accept they can forget stuff. I forget stuff all the time. However where it becomes an issue is when they have forgotten something so they make it up instead of looking it up.
