I spent a most enjoyable day on the platforms at Newton Abbot on Friday and there was quite a bit of work being done there. Can anyone enlighten me as to why please.

I believe it is getting a new entrance. So could be to do with that?

I think this is the planning application, on Teignbridge council planning website:
19/00883/DCR3
“This Planning Statement has been prepared by Jacobs UK Ltd (Jacobs) in support of a full planning application for the ‘Newton Abbot Bridge Access’ project at Newton Abbot Railway Station (Grid Reference SX 867753 712236). The proposal includes a new footbridge that will form an extension to the existing station footbridge and a new station building located in Brunel Industrial Estate. The proposal also includes some landscaping and minor highway works around the new building.”

Interesting, thanks for that. I wonder if there is any provision, and space at either end, for a re-instated 4th platform? You could then separate the Paignton and Plymouth services east of the station.

It could've been done by leaving platform 4 many moons ago & having two separate islands. Times where different however on the railways in the 70s & 80s with only thoughts of less traffic & line closures unlike the very opposite picture we see today.

Signalling done on the cheap in the 1980s.

Thanks for your replies and information. Newton Abbot deserves some development and TLC. Hopefully the works will benefit the station and will certainly give much better access to those working on Brunel estate.

Was a surprise to me when I visited in August, that Newton Abbot had ticket barriers installed? Manned quite frequent as well. How long have they been in ? Barriers in operation all year round? Or just Summer ?

All year round. Installed a couple of years ago.

The additional entrance could plausibly also function as access to a new platform for the branch on that side. Alternativly, by allowing station parking to be relocated to the other side of the railway, space might be made available to restore the previous twin island configuration.

The minimal track layout at Newton Abbot is a direct result of the savage capital spending cuts imposed on BR by the first Thatcher Government in the early 1980s. Original plans for the resignalling had a more comprehensive layout, retaining the four platforms, through lines, and a double junction onto the Torbay branch. A similar cost saving over-simplication occurred at Taunton, although some of the drawbacks of that have been mitigated by the subsequent reinstatement of the centre island platform there.
