Oh okay, I've seen on the forum that their could be a possible Jan trainee course starting so I am hoping to hear from them like between Nov-Dec, don't hold me to that though saw it on a thread, and the person said they heard it from a Driver Manager.

Yes there is a course early next year, that's what they told me in my DMI. So if you are called up and pass the interview you'll most likely be starting around that time. Best of luck.

How did your DMI go? What kind of questions did they ask? If you don't mind me asking.

Was it all questions like that, or were there any of the 'Why do you want to be a train driver? What attributes...? etc, etc' as well? Any questions about the company?

I didnt have any questions on what do u know about the company but always worth researching that. Main areas are saftey, customer service, punctuality, flexibility and ability to retain information. Also they may go into non technical skills so research that. My opinion is that if u get to dmi you are pretty much there already as u have already been through all the testing they are just checking your personality more than anything. Good luck

You are never pretty much there already. I was unsuccessful on my first dmi and got a job on my second one , as have others I know and others on this forum.

Thanks!

You could be right, I'm trying not to think like that though - I don't think complacency is a desirable attribute for a potential train driver after all :D

Getting to the DMI does not mean that you're pretty much there. When I had my DMI there were 7 interviews and 2 got the job as they scored the highest. I failed but passed 2nd time around. Plenty of people will get all the way to the DMI and fail.

sorry didnt mean to devalue the dmi i just meant it is different to a normal interview where the company have no idea who u r as oppose to the company having paid for u to go through a series of testing - hr having being in contact with u for years in some cases - u r more likely to get the job (if you perform well) or put in a talent pool than u would be if there was no financial loss to the company. If u score a certain score in your interview along with more people than they need at that time they are unlikely to throw u away they will keep u till the next course whereas they would just bin u off and pick the highest performing people if they had no investment in u

Yes that makes sense to us but HR dont operate like that, a guard at my depot got all the way to the DMI and failed, he then applied again 8 months later only needing to pass the DMI but his application was rejected. He then contacted HR and explained that they had already invested money in sending him for stage 2 assesments etc but the feedback he received was the application did not score enough. This was for West Midland Trains, so if you fail the DMI they wont keep u in a pool, you'll have to reapply when they advertise again, best thing to do is apply at other TOC's.

My understanding is that your dmi is scored by 2 interviewers scoring each question if u achieve a certain score u have passed the dmi to maintain a fair process. However if more than the required amt of candidates achieve that score they put the highest scoring ones through and if 1 or 2 miss out but still passed are put on hold till the next course. This makes sense as otherwise its a waste of ‘talent’ and investment. In your example he may not have achieved the required score in his dmi so therefore didnt pass the dmi so had to start again. Therefore you are not up against the other candidates so to speak like a normal interview you have just got to achieve the required score to get the job eventually. This may have changed or may not always be the case dependant on how many drivers are needed so i may be wrong.

Does anyone know if they offer you a position at the interview or do you have to wait to hear from them at a later date? Just wondering?

Great news, congratulations mate.

Did they give you any update around the timeframe for the next stages? I heard that the next course will be March but unsure how certain that is.

Unfortunately not but they seem in hurry to get a medical booked by the tone of the email, I've also heard of march time as possibly the next available maybe thats just underground rumours and wishful thinking haha

I wouldn't hold your breath on them being in a rush. I thought the same, five months ago...haha.

Hopefully the medicals will be during the first couple of months of next year. Fingers crossed.

Congrats again.
