I had a day trip to Paris from Etaples today - for those who don't know the Corail Intercités trains on the Paris - Boulogne route are electric hauled as far as Amiens where a diesel takes over (there is a gap in electrification between Amiens and Rang-du-Fliers).

I noticed on the way home that once the diesel had taken over, the noise of the air conditioning dropped out from the point at which the doors had closed and the train was ready to start, until about 10 seconds after it had started moving .This didn't happen under electric haulage .

Can anyone shed any light? I think the locos used on this line are BB67400 (diesel) and BB15000 (electric) - both still fine looking machines and great fun with the random collection of Corail stock used on this route (including some compartment seconds)!

They are indeed good fun. Not long to go until the units arrive though I believe so enjoy them while you can. Slight correction though, its a BB22200 on the Paris-Amiens leg, not BB15000, which can also be found on TER Picardie work out of Nord with VB2N dostos.

Train power line being cut to have the maximum power for departure?

This is the very reason. The 1.5 kV Train heating (and HVAC, and auxiliaries) power line is cut off by a relay when the master controller is set to the first Taction notch/position.

The air conditioning cutting out is a trait of 67300/67400 haulage and, as you says, comes back in after about 10 seconds. I think Deltics used to do this too. 72100s didn't do this, if I remember correctly, probably due to their higher installed power.

I did notice that it cut in and out on the Night Riviera (class 57), though I think it mostly cut out at stations and back in when we set off.

Just resurrecting this thread to confirm that Corail operation is still going strong between Paris and Boulogne. Currently sitting in a compartment just north of Amiens :D

As sad as it is to write this, the time has finally come.. New karts take over Monday morning, this Sunday, 01 September is to be the final day of planned Corail operation to Boulogne-sur-Mer and the end of 60 years of railway history with no more "changer de locomotive" at Amiens... :frown:

Paris Nord - Calais Ville direct to restart soon.

How I will miss the belle BB 67400' et voiture Corail'..
Adieu beaux bleus... :'(

Ah, I intended to have one final ride this summer but too late now... Still have plenty of pics (and memories) though!

OUI! :D

To quote C.O. Jones:

"Good news - still not sure of the end date but diagrams have now been planned until Sunday 22/09.

There seems even to be a possibility they could continue beyond even until Dec. timetable change.

Tomorrow 31/08 no diesels are planned out but Sunday 01/09 should be 3 out.
67523 2017 2036
67413 2034
67549 2030 2027"

Through trains to/from Calais Ville are to be reinstated from next Monday after a hiatus of 17 years, starting with 2026 (HAFAS still shows as running to Corail times with 14 minutes at Amiens) and 2030 in the southbound direction. With 2013 and 2017 going north, both of which are only timed for 3 minutes so surely we can assume these will now be karts?
With some luck we may see a BB 67400 on Corails at Calais one last time!

Mr Jones now reports that diagrams have now been extended yet again, this time until 27 October. Rumors persisting elsewhere they may just hang on until the December TT change.. I believe a BB 67400 has yet to make it up to Calais since the direct trains were reinstated last week, all north of Boulogne-sur-Mer have been carts thus far, it would be nice if 2034 was double headed from Calais on the very last day to recreate a boat train, that would be a fitting send off indeed.. I dream on....
