I thought LNER were gonna make the seats more comfortable on their 800/801 sets compared to GWR 800/802s

After the poor feedback about comfort on GWR??

Where's Holy Island, apart from Holyhead?:D

Are you on an 800 or 801?
Lindisfarne (nr Alnmouth). @Railperf should, I believe, be on an 800/1; the 801/1s are currently only on Leeds diagrams, and specifically went on that route to free up 800/1s for Anglo-Scottish services.

All LNER did was replace the DfT-spec flat cloth with their own cut-pile red/crimson moquette; GWR are now gradually doing the same with their 80x units. LNER's moquette is slightly better, but the difference is negligible compared to replacing the DfT-spec seats (read: the actual seat structures) with something more universally palatable.
They can't go that far for quite some time, however, as they're bound by terms in the Intercity Express Programme contract to run them with those seats.

Ok thanks for the info.
So are the 801/1s going to split eventually to go Bradford/Skipton?
No good for Lincoln or Hull, only a backup diesel engine.

I don't remember such a promise. Only the marketing guff that the seating would be comfortable, because they're 'ergonomic' seats (i.e. the same as GWR 802s but in red).

It all depends on how closely the shape of your ergo matches the design one!

Has anyone tried a camping seating mat or air cushion on them? Anything that works or doesn't or differently to the hacks on the GWR ones?

I still regard it as good as long as we never go back to those soggy sponge seats with fixed foam armrests which bounce your leg into kneecapping you on a metal table edge!

The seat comfort is equal on LNER and GWR Class 800s Just the colour scheme is different. Personally i prefer the warmth of the red fabrics used on LNER. But it makes no difference to actual comfort.

Lincoln/Harrogate/Middlesborough service will be formed of 5-car Class 800/2s, let's hope some elderly HST's come off lease soon as the 800/1s were originally meant to replace these not Class 91s which are been replace by 9-car Class 801s. HST's are non- PRM compliant so makes sense to replace these before the 91s although of course this hasn't happened.

Having travelled from London KX to Leeds this summer using an Azuma my only issue with the train is the rather hard suspension. Other than that they seem pretty good to me.

The 14:00 from King’s Cross is showing as a nine car set.

Thanks, I know LNER said they would be 9s but with the talk of using 2×5 and only 5 going forward from Edinburgh you hope that LNER were correct in the first place

I thought the 2x5 services were going to be primarily for Leeds services so they can, for example, serve Harrogate and Bradford by splitting at Leeds. I believe enough 9 car trains have been ordered to replace the current fleet pretty much like for like (I think there’s one less 9 car ordered than there is in the current fleet).

I am having my very first ride on an 800 between Newcastle and York right now.

The train hasn't even left the platform yet and I'm already hating these seats.

I took a diverted Azuma from Carlisle to Edinburgh yesterday, my first trip on one. I was a bit surprised as I was expecting an HST.

I won't dwell on the seats much. Suffice to say they're very firm, but they're a decent shape, and the legroom and space is pretty good. The thing I noticed the most was acceleration - the thing goes like the proverbial off a shovel, in electric mode at least.

I was quite impressed, actually.

Could somebody be kind enough to tell me how the 800 is a better passenger experience than the existing Class 91. I'm quite happy with the Class 91 and it is not a matter of speed as the Class 91 already operates at the maximum network speed of 125mph. There must be something more than the "thrill" of sitting back in a brand new carriage that smells a little better than the older trainsets.

It's got far more to do with 91s and (especially) HSTs approaching life expiry than anything else.

Yes. I had a return run over the WCML north on an Azuma too. I take it the seat reservation system cannot cope with diversions via Carlisle and so it was back to paper reservations both ways. Traffic lights were dead. No PIS announcements either.
The IETs have to run at non EPS limits..so the timings are around 5 or 6 mins slower than a Pendolino. The brighter and cleaner interiors coupled with the larger windows make the 390s feel claustrophobic in comparison. For the sake of a few minutes i would rather be on the 800. The ride was good too.

Fear not! The crack anti-Azuma/IET re-education team will soon visit you personally to ensure you espouse the correct views in future

Hahaha! I'm sure.

I've already got into huge trouble for suggesting that the HST is a past-it pile of junk these days. I'm in fear of my life.

I did wonder if that was something to do with diversions - paper tickets out yesterday too. We were about ten minutes late leaving, but it turned out that was due to awaiting a crew member rather than anything technical.

Yeah, there's more room inside an IET for sure. I like the subdued lighting in a Pendolino, but the small windows and cramped seating aren't great. I thought the ride was generally good, apart from some excessive forces around sharp curves, but to be fair, this was a WCML diversion, and tilt is used on the WCML for a reason. I'll have to see how the trains feel and behave on the ECML proper.

Issues with reservation on all Lner fleets over weekend.
