hey guys

I’ve been offered the role of trainee conductor with TFW, went for an interview week last Friday, told Monday I got the job and last Wednesday went for a medical which I’ve passed.

They want me on the January course which I’m thrilled about but haven’t heard anything since the medical. I understand it’s not even being a week yet but with starting next month and needing to hand in notice as soon as, just wondering what is kind of the next step? Am I waiting for a contract in the post or are they doing the security checks and references? What is the next step. Any advice/guidance appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Not sure on the next steps sorry, could maybe drop their HR an email. Where is the position based? I've applied for Crewe and Chester as a conductor but the closing date is not up on them yet but I believe the training for these if successful starts in January as well

I'd like to think that they are organised despite cutting it a bit fine. They have to realise you aren't going to hand your notice in until you got a formal offer, and if you can't start on the date, they will have an empty space.

Having said that, I know someone who was offered a job, handed notice in and then week before told the course date wasn't going ahead and they didn't know when! He had to grovel back to employees but eventually started a month later.

Just keep pestering, emailing and phoning. It's all u can do unfortunately

Funnily enough I received an email after I posted this thread asking for information regarding my security check so it looks like it’s moving forward behind the scenes.

The clinician who conducted the medical with me said I had passed tho nothing has been confirmed by TFW but as I’ve received information regarding the security check I can safely assume they’ve gone with the clinicians advice that I’m fit to work lol.

Good effort ! Still not long though, have you handed in your notice?!

Not yet, will send them an email on Friday if I haven’t heard anything asking if I can. Don’t want to do it prematurely.

What's involved in the security check? I'd like to get the info together asap as I'm going to need to hand my notice in sharpish as long as my medical is ok next week. Mines for driver but I'm sure it will be the same info that they require.

You will get a job description and contract through the post which you have to sign and return, and you will get an email from the person leading your course. I had to give 2 weeks notice and think I had everything through 3 weeks before the start date of my course. I would just keep ringing recruitment until you speak to someone or leave a message explaining your requirement to give a months notice. Im into my 3rd week and loving it. Good Luck!

You go onto full pay when you are qualified, after your training course and after you have finished learning your routes. Usually this is around 4 months after starting providing you progress ok?

No you don't - it's after 6 months. Regardless of when you pass out, it's 6 months from the day you start training, so you'll be working trains for a short while whilst still on training salary.

Hello all, I received an email yesterday lunchtime from TFW saying I'd been shortlisted from the recent trainee conductor application.
They advised that the next step was to receive an email link from OPC to complete initial online tests which had to be completed by the end of tomorrow. The next step being an assessment day in Chester this Tuesday 18th.

The OPC email didn't come through (or it least not so far). Obviously I'll email recruitment first thing Monday, but just wondering if anyone else is in the same boat ? Cheers

Hi Ian,

I’m in the same position as you except the email did come through from the OPC, check your junk / spam email and hopefully it will be in there!

I am hoping @Crewefan and @Wheelmeister can give us a heads up on what to expect at the assessment day and prepare for should we make it past the OPC test!

Thanks a lot, unfortunately it's not there. I've been checking, I doubt the email is monitored over the weekend but I've emailed them. Fingers crossed if they can see it's not been sent & something can be done. Here's hoping, and good luck to you of course

Did you manage to speak to TfW or the OPC Ian? there was a bit of conflict on the emails I noticed, the OPC emails said the tests needed to be complete by midnight today (17th) where the TfW email said they need to be complete by midnight on Sunday 16th and would let us know today by lunch time the details of the interview if passed. I haven't heard anything back yet so not sure if they running behind, the dates were mixed up or I didn't pass! going to give it half hour and drop HR an email as will need to get the day off tomorrow from work which is not going to go down well leaving so late!

Hi, no I haven't managed to speak to them. I'm guessing that they are extremely busy, but hopefully will hear from them soon. I didn't get the OPC email so I'm not sure about the dates on that but the TfW email that I got stated tests to be done by midnight on Sun 16th. I expect I've missed the boat on this one as I've not been able to do the tests, hopefully though I'd still be considered next time around. Hope you hear something but I don't think it's a problem to email and ask, it just shows that you're keen.I'll let you know if hear anything

I found out a few days later, granted mine was back in Feb and it was Arriva then, does anyone know if the course is residential for those that have a large distance to travel?

If the course is a long way from your depot then it will indeed be residential - TfW will put you up in a hotel Monday to Friday and pay for your food. And very nice it is too! Theres a group of new conductors currently staying in a hotel in Holyhead for that very reason.

Same here. They must have had a lot of applicants.

I also applied for this role. I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything since? It’s still showing as submitted for me on the website.
