Not sure if their is thread about this already but
As part of Rail Week 2019. Siemens is doing its yearly facility open day this year at the SWR depot in Southampton

First time its been opened to the public in 6 years!

What do you think? Are open days like these beneficial? Anyone going?

As someone who grew up on the south western mainline iam really looking forward to it?

Yes they’re usually interesting for those of us who’re keen on railways, not a fan of this online advance booking only policy these days but it’s obviously better than not having any type of open day whatsoever

I agree, i think its gonna be similar to last years open day with LNR since they have similar units but should be good

I guess the reason they do that is so they can control crowd numbers, Northam is quite a small site as Maintenance Depots go so I imagine they have strict limits as far as visitor numbers go.

I've booked. I have never been to anything like this. I think it will be interesting to see what they do there.

Siemens open days tend to be educational rather than 'for enthusiasts'. Obviously, enthusiasts are welcome but don't expect a line up of heritage traction, etc. They are more along the lines of a guided tour "this is where we repair the loos", "this is how a door mechanism works", that sort of thing. I went to Northampton last year and Old Oak Common (Heathrow Express depot) in 2015 and am booked to go to Northam this time. They are interesting and a bit different to the Crewe 'All Change'-/Bristol St Philips Marsh-/Toton-type events.

Update:

Been sent an email from rail week. This year their supplying a regular mini bus service from southampton central station to the depot

Thats great and all but its getting to Southampton in the first place which is the challenge i guess

Out of curiosity to those who are going, how much would you pay to get to Southampton by train?

Very true  and I suppose it does come down to interest in the fleet itself

Its an interesting time with all the changes to the desiro fleets through the refurbishments.

Also great to speak to staff about future plans to like last year

I wish we could have a B707 at Northam!:lol:

Replace the 0 with a 1 and you regularly get 717s flying over the depot.

I’m interested to know how you can tell it’s a 707 from RTT?

If I had a guess I’d say it’s one of the units that’s been off track for a while after an accident and being returned.

Or maybe it’s someone in TPU having a joke with a headcode ;)

It’s a unit from the maintenance pool, so it’s needed back at Wimbledon Park the next day; the path was refused to let it be a flyer in front of a 1P, so the path back is atrocious, following it until Surbiton iirc, where it’s put on the slows.

When should we be checking RTT to see which trains specifically are going to be at the open day.

wouldnt be surprised if a 707 is there given its a Siemens build and all

If previous Siemens depot open days are anything to go by, the only stock on site will be whatever would be there anyway for routine maintenance (out of service from the night before or there for longer duration repairs). It will be a bunch of 444s and 450s.

Yep, they’re all “maintenance pool” units with a “special surprise”.

What depot are the 707s based in?

Hopefully 444/040 and 450/111 will make an appearance?

yet last year saw a lot of LNR livery units? It was like they were all planned to be there ?

Last year (Northampton Kings Heath) there was a lot of LNR livery units as that is where Siemens service LNR units. Many (not all) of those were LM livery with the temporary interim change. I anticipate seeing loads of SWT livery units at Northam but with temporary SWR branding, maybe one or two in the new livery as maintenance requirements dictate.

so their may already be a third unit in livery then?

It's no certainty, but quite often the last two digits on a "Z" move match the class type, particularly with locomotives. It doesn't mean they always do, just that they often do. Here we are with a 5Z07 running from Wimbledon, where the 707s are based, to the main Siemens depot.

As Dren Ahmeti says, however, it could well be someone who is familiar with that class matching just having a little wind up...

I think a little conspiracy and wind up is needed, especially for the poor driver on the WM8070 diagram which has to pass down all the way to Woking on the stopper and get piloted into Havant from Northam o_O:rolleyes:
