Do the 3-car sets have less installed power than 4-cars? I experienced a 3-car this week, but acceleration was almost identical to the 4-car versions. I half expected them accelerate as quickly as a 3-car 331, but they don't!

a 3 car set has 3 powered bogies; one of the driving trailers has 2 the other has 1. A 4 car set has 4 powered bogies, both driving trailers equipped with 2.

It can't be good for either the wheel bearings or the motors, or indeed any other moving parts, to be sitting around at the factory.

Had my first experience on a 385 today and I was very impressed. They are very nice units and a massive improvement over their DMU predecessors.

In particular I was surprised at how comfortable the seats actually are. They may not look it but they aren’t as firm as they look. The trains are very spacious and the window alignment isn’t as awful as it is in other units. They have a similar build quality to the 380s and remind me of them a lot. They are quiet and accelerate well. I had to changeover to a 320 at one point and it was clear to see the progression in trains from the 90s to now. It really did make the 320s look extremely dated naturally.

Was very impressed.

The WTT path is from Tyne. It's been quite common for that to be replaced by a STP path from Tees.

I find the 385 is noisy compared to the 380s. Particularly when slowing down for Croy from the Edinburgh direction. Class 380 is superior in comfort and build quality imho.

Having been on both many times I'd have to respectfully disagree. The 385 is a far better and better built product imho

380s feel wider to me.

Saw a few parked up in Waverley last night. They look great. Edinburgh finally has decent local trains and a decent tram, even if the tram only goes west!

I have noticed during the week that there always some 385s lying around Corkerhill and Shields, would there not be a way to take these out and put them on more inverclyde services?

Anyone have any idea about Lanark becoming all 385s? Also wonder if the extra 10 385s will be exercised.
The extra 10 was based on Abellio receiving the franchise extension - which looks in the current environment to be politically unlikely.

Not sure what if any compensation ScotRail will have managed to extract from Hitachi but I wouldn't expect it to stretch that far!

If they got 10 free units wabtec would be due them about 300 HST sets if compensation was aligned to level of delay!

I don't think any additional 385's will be introduced at the moment to replace existing 318/320 diagrams, this will most likely happen when the December timetable change starts. I'm sure Lanark is to be fully 385 with Gorock/Wemyss Bay getting additional 385's thus allowing the 318/320's to replace the last of the 314's. I think some diagram changes will have to be done to allow this to happen.

Any new 385's entering service are being rotated with existing 385's meaning there will be a number of spare ones stabled at various depots until December.

I suspect both 001/002 will go north together, which leaves them 8 weeks approx to get ready for service prior to timetable change and the final 314 withdrawal
They might because there no other delivery paths North this month also has anyone seen 101 yet, or is it still not in service?
