Ticket Splitting - Buses?

So, with the railways we can ticket split, but I wondered if anyone knows whether the same can be done for buses?

I have a Stagecoach Worthing Area ticket, and as this runs to the outskirts of Shoreham, I was wondering whether I'd be allowed to use this to it's limit, then purchase a return from the limit to my destination (Southwick), but stay on the same bus?

Seems pointless to have to pay for the part of my journey that I have already paid for, but didn't know if anyone could shed some light on whether this would be allowed.

Thanks In Advance

I don't know in general, but when I was at sixth form, I used to have a Network One ticket (Tyne and Wear). If I wanted to go to (for example) Durham, I'd ask for a ticket from the boundary to Durham. Drivers didn't like doing it, since they had to set their machines forward to the relevant fare zone, then back to where they actually were, so I only asked for it at proper bus stations where there was a dwell time, but it could be issued without problems. It may vary between different ticketing machines.

It shouldn't be issue, the driver will simply have to scroll forward to the correct fare stage and issue the ticket. It's easy to do on the VIX TP5800 machines that Stagecoach use.

Not sure about your specific example but I have done this on Go North East as well travelling outside the Nexus area to Chester-le-street.
A second example a few years ago was on Yorkshire Coastliner using a West Yorkshire Metro ticket and buying a ticket from the boundary to my destination.
No problems in either case.

Thanks all, at least if it's possible I can ask and not feel like an idiot doing so. Hopefully all should be well if it's as easy as you say Robk23oxf

I remember when Uno let you use a Z1-6 travelcard on the 614 between Queensbury and Barnet, so we would go downstairs at Barnet to buy the remaining fare to Hatfield. Not possible now though.

It was certainly common to do exactly this hereabouts when I carried a SYPTE monthly, and wanted to "trespass" into another county. It depends on the zones/areas/distances involved, and doesn't always save very much, if anything, though. Many operators sell day-passes in preference to returns, and singles are often so priced as to make day-passes cost only a little more. ou can only find out the respective fares for your case by consulting the operator (or asking a driver).

I've done this before one time when i bought an Aberdeenshire Zone 3 Dayrider which permits travel as far south as Stonehaven, however later that day i got a lift down to Montrose which is in Zone 4. Because of this my Zone 3 ticket wasn't valid. So when my bus back arrived at the terminus (Montrose Railway Station) i asked if it was okay if i paid the single fare to Stonehaven and then used my dayrider for the rest of the journey, there was a supervisor on the bus at the time and they were perfectly fine with it. Which makes sense because buying a single to Stonehaven then using my dayrider the rest of the way is perfectly acceptable and no different to if i had bought a single to Stonehaven and then switched buses. However when it came to boarding the bus they just let me on for free, this was partially because it was the first day of the route in question operating.

A little bit different I know, but when I traveled with a friend to Hull for a night out a few times who has a concessionary bus pass, he would find he couldn't use his pass on the first 350 back to Scunthorpe so he'd ask if he could pay the fare from Hull to the first stop in Barton, (as a North Lincolnshire pass is valid in North Lincolnshire at all times) then present his pass on the ticket machine once in Barton, and the drivers allowed this.

However, there was one driver who allowed him to travel from Hull to Barton without payment, provided he remembered to present his pass immediately upon arriving in Barton.

I know one driver who when working the 350 route, he'd often pick up passengers on his way back to Scunthorpe in a tiny settlement outside of Scunthorpe called Dragonby and they would have a Scunthorpe Megarider but ask if they could pay the single fare difference from Dragonby to the first stop in Scunthorpe, but he just let them on for free as asking for the fare difference between such a short distance 'wasn't worth it'.

I've done it twice at the boundary on the 184 to Huddersfield from Oldham on my System One AnyBus where I buy a WYPTE Metro at Great Western, although I think I could've just done it when the bus has arrived in Huddersfield bus station because that'd be better than stopping the bus mid-route in the middle of nowhere to buy the ticket for the West Yorkshire part; for those that are telling me I can use a First WY day on the full route, yes I've done that many times, but what if I wanna ride other companies in WY like Transdev and Arriva? One question to others who use the 184, is it alright if I used a System One to board the bus to ride all the way to Huddersfield and just buy the WY Metro day from the bus station upon arrival so I can top up my WY MCard? It's cos MCards can't be topped up on the bus as far as I know.

Another time when I was doing a Rosso Rover to explore East Lancashire (also works with a Transdev Lancashire day), since it's valid on the X41 from Accrington to Ramsbottom and I already had a System One for local travelling, I could combine both tickets to ride it full route from Accrington to Manchester although the driver asked me to come down to tap my GetMeThere card at Ramsbottom (could also at Edenfield, but I preferred to do it at a major stop). This doesn't work on the X43, however, since the boundaries on that route for the GM and the Lancs tickets don't meet as neither side are valid on the motorway section (i.e. System One doesn't cover Rawtenstall and Rosso/Lancs day tickets don't cover Prestwich or Manchester on the other side of the motorway bit).

The likely answer is no as your system 1 ticket will only take you to the border.

MCards can be topped up on their app if you have a mobile phone with NFC.

I've used West Yorkshire tickets and then paid additional fares on buses to Skipton, Harrogate, York, Oldham (via Ripponden), Rochdale with no problems.
When doing it on the 184 it always seems to be a problem and drivers struggle to get the right tickets.
A while ago I thought I'd been charged the right amount from the border to Uppermill and then discovered afterwards I'd been sold a Child ticket from Huddersfield.
Glad there was no inspector boarding that bus!
