There was a rumour of some of them being saved for Transport For Wales's Premier Service but they would not need anywhere near as many carriages as there are MK4s.

Not a rumour, it is happening - though you are right they don't need many. Only 12 coaches plus 3 DVTs, enough for 3 sets of 4+DVT.

Now that there are four 91s withdrawn from service how long before there are enough spare parts to get 91116 back in traffic?

Given they were ripping 108 apart for parts they may as well have withdrawn 116 and kept 108 in traffic. Sure there is reasonable logic in there somewhere, probably to do with servicing patterns etc...

Looks like another 2 mk4’s at booths when I passed this morning.

I am surprised that the ROSCO is so keen to scrap them. Maybe it is the best price they can get. But considering the charter market mainly uses mk2 trains, surely these are good replacements (unless gauge issue will make it impossible). Don’t get me wrong, in terms of miles done and age they have earned their money. Just very surprised scrapping is happening so quickly.

Two thoughts immediately spring to mind. Can the various charter outfits afford to buy them and are any of them willing to take on a more complex vehicle that the Mk4 represents compared to the Mk2?

Are the charter operators not bound by PRM modifications? That is really what I was thinking. The MK2 (if they need to be) will need to upgraded which as we see with the MK3s is tricky. The mk4s are nearly ready. But I guess that is a thread of its own.

Not that I'm aware of. The ORR have made noises at expecting the sector to do better on a number of things (including PRM) but as far as I'm aware they're not bound by the same requirements. If they are then there's going to be a lot of cancelled charter trains come January 1 2020!

But yes we're probably wandering well off-topic here now...

91116 was dragged up to doncaster dead in tow by 91109 this evening so maybe not long.

The news that Europhoenix have acquired some 91s seems worthy of its own thread to avoid this one getting cluttered up with both that and what LNER are doing with their remaining 91s and Mk4s. Let's focus on LNER on this thread and anyone wanting to discuss further the use of 91s by Europhoenix please do so on the new thread which can be found here.

its interesting to see in the photo posted upthread that the Mark 4s are being scrapped quickly whilst a much longer withdrawn Mark 3 DVT and a blue grey mark 3 are still waiting to be cut. I’d assumed all the spares that could be removed would have been removed prior to moving to Booths so I wonder why the rush to scrap them over the Mark 3 vehicles.

I know that those Mk.4s in that image were the ones that arrived by road from Doncaster and had been used for component recovery there so it makes sense to scrap what's left over and not needed. It does make me feel old seeing Mk.4 carriages being scrapped though!

i don’t dispute its best to scrap them as most items of use had already been removed but what surprised me was that they were scrapped so soon when far longer out of use vehicles were in the background there. Makes me wonder why the priority to cut these vehicles instead of the others. They’re all meeting the axe, so I just wondered what the incentive to cut these first would be.

Maybe they were stored on the same siding: last in first out? ;)

Call me soft but I hope that 91110 and 91119 aren’t going to be scrapped. The swallow intercity livery looks most impressive on the already handsome 91’s and then there’s the historical significance of the record breaking 91110.

110 is apparently due to be preserved. And the Swallow livery is really just a bit of stickyback plastic over a metal shell. I can't see 119 being scrapped any time soon however; given that LNER practically rebuilt it from a torched carcass (with everything inside being overhauled), it's almost certainly going to be the last one withdrawn.
