At the great majority of collieries they wouldn’t fit under the loading screens. Simple as that.

And at those locations where the hooded versions were loaded by face shovels, the hoods showed extensive damage.

I was a coal controller at Nottingham and Doncaster.
Dr Hoo is correct, we weren't allowed to send "canopy" wagons as they were called to certain pits.
A number of HAA's were fitted with side canopies to stop coal dust from being blown off in transit, they were recoded HBA, HCA, HDA and HFA, they had various permitted maximum speeds.

Denby colliery north of Derby was canopies only, residents adjacent to the line had complained of coal dust being blown onto washing hung on washing lines so we had to make sure we always had a 36 set of HFAs spare. Millerhill to English power stations was another where local residents had complained about coal dust being blown off trains crossing the Royal Border Bridge at Berwick.

Some collieries and disposal points would accept anything, Bentinck, Avonmouth, Oxcroft, Rugeley come to mind.

Thanks for this. Do you know why the MGR fleet didn't have a universal speed limit? Just curious that's all.

Certain flows were required to travel at higher speeds. From memory of 25 years ago the HAA's had a maximum speed of 45mph loaded and 55mph empty. Flows between Avonmouth and Didcot used HDA's and HBA's with a maximum speed of 60mph loaded because of having to fit in between the hst's. There were also HMA's which were modified in the 1990's which had a maximum speed of 60mph empty and 45mph (I think) loaded. We had the HMA's at Toton and Worksop and I think they were also used between Warrington, Carlisle and Mossend because of their higher speed. I have a little book somewhere with notes I made about the flows and what went where, I'll see if I can find it.
