Northern have updated their vacancy board with some new jobs today (Thursday 23rd May).

There are two trainee conductor jobs up for grabs at Manchester Picadilly and Victoria respectively.

I applied for a previous trainee conductor post at Picadilly that was advertised in April. I dipped the paper sift but unfortunately I cannot find out why.

I'm tempted to give it another go but are there any members who can share their views and suggest whether I should reapply?

Do Northern check your previous applications or do you get a clean slate once you've been turned down?

I would double check but yeah it’s usually 6 months wait for the same company and position.

I was always under the impression that if you'd failed the paper sift you could have another go but if it was interview or tests, you have to wait 6 months....?

Ultimately the answer will be in the rejection email

I have been rejected for 4 driver and 1 conductor position and theres no where in the email that says you cant apply, even on the application theres no where that asks.

I fully appreciate that Northern get swamped with many applications but at least if they give you some indication of where you went wrong then you can at least brush up on that for future applications.

Like I said, I dipped at the paper sift for the previous trainee conductor post. I'm only assuming I went wrong because I didn't download details of my referees which I have of course addressed. I've also completely redrafted my CV.

The rejection e-mail was fairly standard and didn't state anything about a time limit to reply again for the same post.

I applied and got through paper sift without providing references.

If there noting in the rejection email or on the initial application stage asking about previous applications then I would just apply.

That's an interesting point about the references.

As a standard format on the DB website, there are three portals for your CV, cover letter and references. These portals allow you to download your own documents to add to the application. Each portal states it's optional to download these.

I also remember the previous trainee conductor application asked you a question about when you have resolved a conflict situation and for you to evidence an example. Coming from a police background I have extensive experience of conflict situations and so I had no problem evidencing a particular incident. Again, as I've said, I dipped the application at the paper sift stage. Clearly, I used a perfect example in the question but as I've said previously and in another thread, I didn't provide details of my referees. Although it says optional, I would assume your not going to gain an advantage over another candidate who has provided their references when you haven't!!!!!

As for the point I raised about the question, I also applied for a customer service role with Northern but again I dipped that at the paper sift stage. On that application I didn't get asked the question that had come up in the trainee conductor one. I think each application varies slightly on what they ask you. I've recently applied for one of the trainee driver roles and on that application it didn't ask any questions at all! I restructered my CV and provided the contact details of my referees for that application, which I sent off three weeks ago. I'm still awaiting an update which is the longest time period I have had so far without an e-mail back from Northern so maybe no news is good news?

Your example was probably perfectly reasonable, and as such you’ve done nothing wrong so to speak. However, with hundreds often thousands of candidates, not all can get through the sift. There were no doubt lots with non-police type backgrounds with equal if not more advanced levels of experience.

As others and I keep saying to people, just keep chipping away and you’ll get there eventually. Definitely don’t give up.

I think alot of the application process is luck especially for conductor any way. I applied as a joke because I got annoyed about being rejected yet again for a driver roll so I went for a conductor one didn't read the app put random answers down and even uploaded a cover letter that was meant for a train driver job at a different station (said hull then what ever the ref was) I got onto the online assessment where I failed but I was unprepared and didn't try.

Still not working for me.

I have tried numerous jobs and keeps doing the same thing.

I have tried changing all dates. Also removing them.

There are no red Fields missing as it says!

There was an issue with the DB website back in March/April and it sounds like the same problem again! I e-mailed Northern at the time and they confirmed there was a technical problem with the site. I would strongly suggest you contact them just to raise this. They did get back to me once the DB site was up and running again.

Just found out today that I have been successful following my interview and assessment day for the conductor Manchester position. Just got to wait up to 3 weeks for a medical now. To say I’m over the moon is an understatement. Really wanted this job and happy to be so close to landing it.

Well done mate.

Can I ask - is the trainee conductor role you've got the one that was advertised for Manchester Piccadilly back in April?

Hi CJ, No this one was just listed as Conductor Manchester and it was the back end of July when I applied. Had my interview last week and found out yesterday. There is actually a post available on the Northern Careers page for this job on now.

3 weeks for medical? Let's hope so. I have been waiting for a medical for a month now and I have seen that some have been waiting much longer.

Since posting that I had a phone call today to say that they will be trying to aim for around November time either in Leeds or Manchester. Guess it’s just a waiting game.
