For what it is, looks nice - I'm still unconvinced about unpainted grabrails but otherwise pretty good. The internal dot matrix screens rather look like they belong on the outside though, clearly very bright and quite low resolution, I'm not sure how I'd feel about sitting directly opposite that staring at it for my journey.

I think they're a masterstroke. No matter how so painted or coated they always end up scratched and tatty looking. As people look before grabbing they get noticed too. Winner.

I thought they had to be in bright colours for visibility purposes?

Is it just the photo or are they that grey inside? Looks a bit dull

With the squashed up seats and wider aisles for standing, they bear a striking resemblance to the LU except for the seat orientation.

Hope people remember their deodorants in hot weather!

I preferred the first real iteration of the Merseyrail livery, silver and the warm yellow. GMPTE obviously agreed, by the way they shamelessly ripped off the design on their metrolink trams, with minor replacing curves with dots!!

Unfortunately a few years ago Merseyrail gave a vinyls contract out to a firm that not only came up with a pretty garish design but also used a really awful cheap looking yellow.

This design looks better than that, but hope they liven that dark grey up with some nice single round Ms between each set of doors.

Seen a pic of the front of the 777. Can’t link it unfortunately as it’s on a couple of closed FB groups. But let’s just say it will polarise opinions. It looks quite different to the mock up and doesn’t have glass in the emergency door.

They have to stand out from their surroundings. Usually a bright colour is an easy way to do this but it isn't the only way.

To me the silver/metal handrails don't stand out against the grey background. Indeed they look like the handrails trains had before the rules changed!

I cant find it now but there was a comment on someone's Twitter who Is involved with the trains that those grab rails arent finished and will have a yellow covering when delivered to Merseyrail.

I think Grand Central trains look really classy.

I think they look cheap and tacky - I do however like this Merseyrail colour scheme.

I see however they have retained the stupid back-of-shoulders-rests which I complained about on the mock-up. Great for kids, useless for tall people.

Otherwise...it's a FLIRT (technically a METRO[1] I think, but roughly the same thing in terms of appearance) - same as all the others - and good kit!

[1] Anyone else disappointed they haven't done a funny name for that product range?

I don't think that's right. METRO is supposed based on the Berlin underground which is based on Tango. To be fair there's a ton of overlap in terms of components, but it looks likte the key difference is that METRO has components and traction that can be fitted throughout the train (no larger bogies for traction, no traction cupboards), whereas FLIRT puts traction in specific location (motor bogie + transformers behind the cab, and occasionally additional motor bogies in the middle for longer FLIRT's).

Case in point: the 777 has motors on all the jacob's bogies, none on the end bogies. All Flirt's are motored end-bogies, and additional non-jacob's bogies in the middle of some longer trains (PKP, SOB, and the 745).

Unrelated, but in case it's not already mentioned: Stadler claim these units are ready for ERTMS and dual-voltage conversion.

Could someone remind me when they are planned to be introduced into service. Appreciate this is a long way off yet.

It does look..odd. Definitely different than the mock up and somewhat breaks the whole M light cluster design. Shame they didn't go for a corridor connector if this is how it's going to look.

Some of the German train Überfans have been snapping it already

It's definitely only temporary. You can see that it's basically just a metal plate. The trains require end doors.

I'd agree, that clearly isn't an openable door. I wonder why it's missing? Perhaps a design or manufacturing fault requiring the door to be redone?

Someone explained on Twitter that it simply takes a while for the door to be made as it's quite a complex door and as it's not essential for testing, they've put the temporary one in place rather than wait.

Isn’t it also common practice to run air hoses and the like through a temporary door plate when on unbraked delivery moves? I’m sure some other units have appeared recently with something temporary on the front for transit...

The regulations state that they need to contrast with adjacent surfaces, so not necessarily brightly coloured. They also need to be non-slip which makes think they must have a coating ad bare grab rails are certainly not non-slip.

Strange door layout with more doors in the middle carriages, and only 1 set in the outer ones, I wonder how that will impact on passenger flows on what are urban units?
