I remember when the picc-deansgate line just had the 304's doing the Altrinchams. 1 from Crewe via Stockport, one from Alderley Edge via stockpot, and two off the Styal line.
The liverpools via Warrington and the chesters terminated at oxford rd.
Then there was the centerline bus to Victoria...
The Chesters and the Warrington stoppers terminated there. The fasts to Liverpool continued to Piccadilly P13 and reversed there, running wrong line back to Oxford Road.

Though that section isn't new, is it? Isn't the Windsor Link strictly the bit between the Chat Moss line and Salford Crescent station?

Was the old viaduct disused or freight only?
The South Junction line was freight only between Castlefield Jn and Ordsall Lane — it hadn't carried regular passenger traffic for many years. And yes, the Windsor Link is strictly the Ordsall Lane to Salford Crescent section. When it was built, things were done so that the continuous lines at Ordsall Lane were the Link lines, with the Chat Moss line from Victoria joining in a trailing junction and then immediately leaving in a facing junction. The recent changes have switched this round, so that the Chat Moss lines are once again the continuous pair, with the South Junction line joining in a trailing junction and then the Link line leaving in a facing junction.

The real solution is to be found by closing the station completely, and connecting it by travellator to Manchester Oxford Road to preserve the exits.

Appreciate I'm straying well into crayon territory, but given how hemmed in Oxford Road is by large expensive real-estate, and how relatively unhemmed-in Deansgate station is (not to mention how handy it is as a Metrolink interchange), is there not a case for actually closing Oxford Rd & expanding & improving Deansgate?

I know Oxford Rd has it's listed wooden roof etc. but as a functional station, it's pretty poor & as noted, in fairly easy walking distance of both Piccadilly & Deansgate.

Obviously any closure would also have to be accompanied by much-improved access & capacity at Piccadilly.

The huge demand for the Universities and Oxford/Wilmslow Road corridor would suggest that to be a total non-starter.

Thinking about it some more I can imagine extended platforms and a concourse up on the viaduct connecting what are Oxford Road and Deansgate making 1 station. Travellators connecting the Deansgate and Oxford Road exits.

It’d be eye wateringly expensive though I’d imagine... It could regenerate what is a bit of a run down part of town though.

I don't think it is actually rundown. I think it's meant to have this post-industrial, postmodern urban look and feel.

Deansgate is too close to Castlefield Junction. Trains stopping or starting there traverse the junction more slowly and so reduce the capacity of the corridor.

Isn't that half the problem with Castlefield Corridor though - that it's a regional rail network trying to fill a gap that should really be filled by Metrolink?
If Oxford Rd didn't exist in the first place, that University/Rusholme corridor would probably have been one of the first candidates for tramlines.

Again crayon territory, but with no Oxford Rd. the actually junction could be located east, of Deansgate with existing Deansgate platforms heading to Birchwood only & new ones heading to Salford Cresc only (or vice versa)

Hardly. The case for Metrolink down there is to get rid of the overbussing and replace it with a smaller number of larger electric vehicles. It's nothing to do with the case for the station itself, which if there was a tram would be the main interchange with it.

Closing it would be a bit like closing Waterloo East because you can get the Tube/bus.
