Say you have a Z1 oyster travelcard, and you want to go to Brighton. The end of the zone system is at Gatwick Airport. So you tap in with your season ticket at, say, VIC, and also buy a single ticket from GTW -> BTN. If you are inspected between VIC/GTW, you can show them a valid travelcard, and if you are inspected between GTW/BTN, you can show them your single ticket.

Is this actually illegal?

No. If they inspect between edge of z1 and Gatwick you don't have a valid ticket

Why would that be? If you have Oyster it’s valid to travel via Oyster Payg.

Ah, didn’t mention that I meant a Travelcard on an oyster, sorry!

But if you don't touch out at Gatwick then you won't be charged the appropriate PAYG fare for the journey you're actually taking. You need to a hold a ticket to cover Z1 to Gatwick Airport or you need to touch out at Gatwick Airport for this combination of tickets to be valid.

It is not illegal until the point you fail to touch out at Gatwick Airport and pay the correct fare, provided you touched in at the beginning of the journey.

If you don't pay the correct fare then yes it is most certainly illegal. If your intention for not touching out was deliberately avoiding to pay the correct fare, you will risk a criminal record on top of the actions being illegal.

There is nothing else to be said.
