hello I am travelling on the 16:17 Manchester Airport to Cleethorpes Service from Meadowhall. I came out of Doncaster on to the South Humberside Main Line when I noticed the electric wires continue for a bit on the line then stop about 2 miles in (guessed the distance) anyone know why?

That will be an overhead Line overrun for if a train is signalled the wrong way.

It’s a bit more than a run off... it’s so an electric train can reverse clear of the ECML. Routed from Donny on to the down (for some reason the line from Scunthorpe is the down), behind D308, change ends, then come back in to Doncaster. It’s about 600metres long, mostly on the down line.

The line from Scunthorpe is the "Down" because in the days of old the "Up" to London direction was via Grimsby and the now closed line onwards via Louth / Boston to London and not via Doncaster.

Its a bit like the East Suffolk Line which is wired to allow electric locos from London to detach and shunt back to the Holding or Field Sidings at Ipswich Station

I’ve heard that explanation before but I’m not convinced that it’s any more than a coincidence. This is a former MS&LR line, the route onwards via Grimsby towards Louth and ultimately London is former GNR and so indirect as to be irrelevant for the majority of the MS&LR. The original route was Up right through *from* Manchester at construction, London presumably not yet on the agenda at that stage!
