Scotrail said earlier on twitter that they'd added another 385 to the fleet and that 66 were now in service. Any idea which one was added?

I'm assuming 043 is in service too then, leaving just 001/002/044 and 101.

Don’t know if this is of any interest, but I am at Queen Street (surprise) and there’s an 8 coacher at platform 7 (1500 to EDB) formed from 385107 and 385120 with the 1st class at the front and rear ends, contrary to the usual practice of having it all together in the middle.

I have observed on a few accasions 8 car sets with first class at the front and rear ends and also in the middle. Is there a set way for first class on the 8 cars or is it just the way the units are facing before coupling up?

I think it's meant to be all together in the middle, but no particular effort is made to keep it that way, if 444 to 444 is easier, then that is done.

I know it might just come across as moaning, which I don't want to do, but now that I'm regularly riding 385s between Edinburgh and Glasgow, I have to say that having two first class cabins is a colossal waste of space.

Other than that, I've been rather enjoying my time travelling on the 385s recently. Reliability and punctuality have all been excellent. Shame that they're being left so manky inside and out, but that's a ScotRail/general public issue, not a Hitachi one.

A double Turbostar would have had four first class cabins!
Surely the solution would be to offer reasonably priced first class tickets on the quieter services. Perhaps introduce a cheap weekday upgrade or 1st advance tickets on some services.

The first class is fine. On declassified services like Dunblanes people just go in it if it’s busy. On Cumbernaulds it’s never busy enough to matter. On the shuttles people just cram in regardless of whether they have paid or not.

Perhaps they should start charging £5 off-peak for an upgrade whenever a set with first class turns up.

Also, with nearly all sets in service, have there been any developments regarding their use in Ayrshire?

I assume that the final allocations will become clear from next week, when platforms 4 and 5 at QS reopen and presumably all E-G services move over to 8 coaches.

I'd imagine it would be officially 8-car from the Dec timetable. However if the stock's available I'd expect more services to become 8-car as soon as the platform work's completed.

I think that's a really good idea; seems crazy just to let them go to waste. Seeing that they offer super-offpeak tickets between 11am-3pm or something like that, it makes sense to also try do the same thing with first class.

But surely all the 4-coach sets already in service, just that half of them are appearing on other EGIP services - I think I read somewhere most of the Cumbernauld services are 4.

Most are, and a fair few Dunblane services are too.

About a month ago when I was at Falkirk Grahamston I counted 2, 3 car & 8, 4 car sets on the Cumbernauld & Dunblane services off peak, prior to the E&G hourly departures going 8 car it was mostly 10, 4 cars on both routes (most Cumbernauld & Dunblane services interwork at Waverley now) off peak.
I think when the E&G goes fully 8 car there could be 6 or 7 4 cars on the Cumbernauld/Dunblane routes with the remainder 3 cars.

Somewhere between Waverley and Queen Street.

Oh but it is!

I try and remember where the doors tend to align with platform furniture, and my heart sinks when I see a 'double yellow' 1st class chunk of train roll into one of my magic spots.

I snuck into 1st Class a wee while back between Haymarket and Waverley to see what the upgrade gets you. Not much apparently. It also looks to be lightly used. Given how busy the 7:45 Edinburgh - Glasgow was this morning, do we really need 1st class on this service?

8 car on Saturday . First class in middle of the 8 car . Loads got on at Haymarket at this section . Many just sat in First class , also next to this section is standard with little seating .
