There are reports of a train on fire this morning on the Croxdale Viaduct, just outside Durham, all lines are currently blocked as a result.
Any idea what service/unit was involved?
Hope everybody onboard the train is unhurt and the fire wasn’t too bad

I heard it was TPE 185108 which is on fire on Croxdale Viaduct. Passengers have been safely evacuated and a RHTT is behind it. Train was doing Manchester Airport to Newcastle.

"Major disruption until the end of the day", so unlikely to be a false alarm.
LNER may run via Durham coast line, according to NRE.

Was it an actual fire or was it that the smoke alarms onboard were going off?
It’s been confirmed by the fire service that there was a ‘small fire’ onboard the service. I’m not sure what constitutes as small, however.

A viaduct location must make evacuation harder and make getting resources to the location more difficult. I hope all involved are safe and unharmed. The identity of the train is secondary to all of that.

I've just watched (on Open Train Times) 1P17 (0817 TPE Manchester - Newcastle) set back into a siding at Tursdale Junction (Ferryhill) 136 late. The siding is not showing occupied.

1E11 just passed me at Eaglescliffe South.

On a separate note a person has sadly been hit by a train at Newark, further adding to disruption along the line.

Anyone know the state of the line at Newark and Durham currently? From a quick scan at Traksy it appears that it's open again in both locations so it's a case of dealing with residual delays caused by massively out of position sets and crews?

I am travelling later so I'm rather hopping that matters might have somewhat recovered by then...

Onboard 1E13 0755 Inverness to London Kings Cross and we've been told we'll be taking the diversion via the coast and will be ~1h late into York. Already running late due to a broken down train at Pitlochry.

Despite the above, we haven't taken the diversion - we're on the main line. Stopped just outside Darlington. Passed 185108, which had a fire engine parked next to it.

I'm not on the trains today. As well as the persons family and loved ones, I feel for the driver who would most certainly have not expected to have this happen when there's a train on fire.

I hope all train operators get through today - people might say 'Oh they will' but there are occasions when 2 incidents can be too much in one day for a busy rail operator!

RealTimeTrains has shown a few services calling at Durham in the last half an hour so presumably yes it is up and running

LNER services out of Leeds have also taken a dive, from 12:45 until 14:45 no services have left in the direction of London with the usual advice of travelling via Manchester, Sheffield. At one point it appeared that the 14:15 was going to leave however 5 minutes before departure everyone was turfed off, only to be told that that train would then form the 14:45 and to again board the service!
Quite a few managers present at Leeds.
Thoughts go out to the family & friends of the fatality.

Looking at the photo on the chroniclelive website link, it’s not on the viaduct, but a few hundred metres away from it.

Significant queues of trains being held either side of Newark. Only a handful of trains diverted via Lincoln / Spalding.

The affected train, 185108 on 1P17 suffered catastrophic engine failure in the Hett Mill area and was brought to a stand ajacent to the A167 road bridge immediately south of Croxdale Viaduct. It has been suggested a blown turbo which led to the engine oil catching fire but this will no doubt need to be investigated. In The attached photo the flames are coming out of the exhaust. The train was evacuated onto a nearby crosscountry voyager unit and the passengers taken back to Darlington while some LNER services were diverted via Durham Coast all other train services were suspended.

Credit where it's due. I was at Doncaster to put a friend on the 1259 XC service to Southampton. As the Lady is not very railway savvy I feared the worst but good work by one or more people got the train, which should have started at Newcastle, started from York and it was only 5 late at Donny. Someone deserves a pat on the back.

Might be of interest for some. On the Hertford loop in a 10 Car Azuma. Assume diverted but no announcements. On the 1D20.

Was catching 1N91 on way back from a conference, GC only ticket. Fearing the worst I trudged over to ticket office who informed me all operators accepting tickets so I’m on 1S26 the 1700 to Edinburgh instead. Good work clearing the crowds at KX which wasn’t massively busy surprisingly.
