Switch under the platform (Mod Note: Datum plates!)

I have noticed that at some stations there is a white sliding switch under the opposite facing platform, just out of curiosity could someone please tell me what it's for.

That sounds like, and everyone say it with me now, a datum plate.

Search the forums and you'll find dozens of threads on them, probably our most asked question.

Long story short they provide essential data about the track measurements at their location to permanent way staff.

Thanks, my girlfriend thought that they controlled the under platform heating
