Hi. Does anyone know how long the turnaround time is from sending In all the pre employment paperwork to getting a confirmed start date at NR?

I think background checks in this case are pretty straight forward.

In certain careers, they do very thorough background checks. When I applied to join the police in 2001, I had to disclose details of immediate family (parents, brother, live in girlfriend) and the HR do further checks on these people to see if you are at risk of being compromised in a police role (for example a family member being involved in drug activities). The police recruitment also conduct checks on your financial background (a cop in debt is another no-no) and other things like business interests. Very thorough and it takes weeks/months to get through the screening process.

Fortunately, most jobs don't need to go into this much detail. I think a standard CRB is carried out on this occasion that only takes a few days.

Can you say whether or not a PNC check is part of a basic CRB check at all? I went to jail on remand and trying to get a good idea of what I can and can't do now job wise?
Thanks Harry Jr.

So you are on this thread saying you were on remand , another asking if you could work on the railway again if you refused to take a drug and alcohol test and another saying you heard you can't get a job with a certain company if you been convicted of terrorism or benefit fraud. Are you asking all this for yourself , because if you are then you may need to get yourself straight .

A basic CRB check WILL involve a PNC check, However it will only show convictions that are not ‘spent’, for example some types of caution will disappear after 3 months. So being on remand wont show, but the conviction (if you were convicted) might show dependant on what it was, what the sentence was and how long ago it was. See here.

Did mine the other day, submitted the form Monday evening, received the result Tuesday afternoon. Its quite straight forward just depends on how busy CAPITA (who do them for NR) are.

To answer your question, there are a few things to take into consideration. The first one is whether or not it's declareable under the Reballitation Act 1974. A lot of offences are classed as spent after five years but more serious offences where the person has gone to prison are sometimes declareable for a lifetime. I would suggest just researching spent and unspent convictions on the Internet and see how your own circumstances would affect you in CRB checks.

The second issue surrounding CRB checks is the nature of the job you are applying for. For example anything to do with domestic violence or sexual offences would rule you out of working with children or vulnerable people but it wouldn't necessarily rule you out of certain driving jobs (school bus driver would be out for a start!) or working in engineering.

Again as another forum member has stated if you have been on remand but not actually convicted of anything at court then a CRB wouldn't come back with anything.

As a final point - a small handful of jobs do have extremely water tight vetting procedures. For example, in the police - if you've never been convicted of criminal offences but your name has appeared in intelligence reports for things like organise crime or where there is evidence of inappropriate behaviour (such as being involved in football disorder) then sadly this can go against you if you want to be a cop. This will also affect applications to organisations like M15 or the Ministry of Defence where they will pick up any any whiff of wrong doing even though you have never been in front of a court!!!

I hope what I have written does make sense. I think in the railway industry they will just conduct the standard CRB but usually organisations like Capita only provide employers with basic information anyway.

All Network Rail roles require BPSS which is the basic government standard for pre employment checks. Depending on the role, you may also require government national security vetting but this is normally stated on the role description.

I got a confirmation letter from DBS and online it says the certificates been issued but still heard nothing from NR HR. Is this normal?
