Following on from the MK4 withdrawal thread, where it was confirmed that HSTs are all going to be withdrawn from LNER use, I thought it best to create a seperate thread to discuss it further.

I suspect 43300 will be going soon, especially since it had all of its nameplates and safety labels and whatnot stripped from it.

Any ideas why the second inverness train yesterday was around 150L? seemed bloody empty passing DBL, as no doubt the (now) earlier Stirling train was more useful for a good chunk of people.

Several incidents on the ECML: a 185 fire between Durham & Newcastle, and TWO people hit by trains; 1 at Newark, 1 near Potters Bar.

How do you know?
As I say its not a Porterbrook power car they were supposed to be the first ones withdrawn from service but I may well be wrong. 43208 may be an early withdrawal except that it has only just comeback into service.

Why are the LNER power cars transferring to EMR?

I can understand Mk3 coaches transferring as the LNER coaches are closer to PRM than the EMR coaches but am not sure why power cars need to transfer.

Is there an advantage to having MTU rather than VP185?

They're all going by the end of the year so it doesn't really matter who owns them

No, the VP185 is the better engine than an MTU

if the VP185 is the better engine why was it not chosen for GW and LNER? Was it purely down to cost?
It was FGW’s experience with them and the lack of support from Paxman in the late 1990s. It suffered from the curse of Alstom - who owned Paxman at the time - and their chronic inability to support their products. See also Classes 175, 180, 458 etc etc.

The VP185 is actually cheaper to install, goes longer between overhauls, uses less oil and is similar in fuel consumption to the MTU.

It's because Paxman were owned by Alstom at the time, and gave First Group poor support.
So they went with MTU

I find it interesting that the VP185 is the better engine but I'm not surprised!

Maybe the reason to eliminate VP185's is to reduce exhaust emissions. I find in terms of this the VP185 in the middle between a Valenta and MTU.

I've noticed the exhaust from an MTU I find smells a bit different to a VP185.

As long as EMR keep the same carriages, I'm not fussed. I suspect this is a forlorn hope though !

It will either be VP+current stock or MTU+ex-East Coast. No mixing and matching.

Think I saw something on Twitter last week mentioning that NL65 had finally been stood down with 43061 and 43075 finally returning to EMR.
The Stirling to London Kings Cross service is due to switch to Azuma operation from 17/11 with one Aberdeen diagram converting to Azuma in early December. Perhaps we will see the first LNER HST sets go off lease then?

How many more times do we have to do this?

For the hard of understanding, 43061/075 and NL65 are not EMR vehicles so are not returning to them.
