Whereas Viz magazine frequently takes the mick out of Tipton and its imaginary Councillor Guthrie, Private Eye takes the mick out of Neasden and its imaginary football manager, Ron Knee.

Halsall was the place where the first sod of the Leeds to Liverpool Canal was dug in 1770. The only tunnel on the Canal is at Foulridge in Lancashire.

Seaton Delaval Hall was built for the local landowner and developer Admiral George Delaval on the outskirts of Seaton Sluice by Sir John Vanbrugh between 1718 and 1729. Another of Vanburgh's creations is Kings Weston House, which is in Kings Weston Lane, Kingsweston, Bristol.

Woking is essentially a nineteenth century New Town established on the London to Southampton railway (some distance from the original and much smaller settlement now called Old Woking). Another such 'new' town on the same railway line is Eastleigh (although established for a different reason: Woking a commuter town, Eastleigh a w works town).
