Looking to book a journey on this route but struggling to find out if it’s actually running. Man at Seat 61 recommends booking through a website that seems to be dead and the Shosholoza Meyl website says the service is suspended. Would be grateful for any assistance.

From the Shosholoza Meyl website and journey planner it looks like the service is not running. You could try 'phoning or e-mailing one of the Contact Us numbers contained in http://www.shosholozameyl.co.za/contact.html
Not sure why you say the www.southafricanrailways.co.za website of African Sun Travel is 'dead'?

My hunch is that it's very unlikely. The challenges facing PRASA and Shosholoza Meyl (and, frankly, all parts of the South African railway system) will take years to resolve.

Sadly, this is nothing unusual. Hope you enjoyed the trip - I suspect the era of long distance passenger trains in South Africa may be drawing to a close.
