I see Platforms 4 & 5 have reopened with the extensions finished. Along with 2 & 3 which were completed a few months ago, does this mean that 8 car services will be on all EG services?
Going by what I’ve read on this thread - officially all the services will be 8-car from December. However more services may run as 8-car than there are just now, dependent on stock availability.

I can't imagine that the changeover to an all 8-coach operation will be a 'big bang' event at the Dec timetable change. I would expect that there will be a gradual switch over the next few weeks. Indeed the only reason for some services remaining 7-coach until then would be if, under the present timetable, certain services still have to use platform 6 which hasn't been lengthened.

The other reason may be that there are some 4 coach services on other routes that are intended to become 6 coach once the final 3 coach 385s are in operation.

It may be that switching them from 4 to 3 would cause more overcrowding than leaving some current E-G services at 7 coach.

I think that would really depends on the route, some of the 4-car workings are quite lightly loaded.

And there are 24 4-coach sets, with only 16 needed for the e-g fasts.

Am I right that there are three 3-coach sets delivered but not yet accepted into service, and one more still to be delivered?

Allowing for some maintenance spares that's at least six spare 4-car units, so sone 4-car workings will likely continue in some form.

It's not many, 3 I think.

I think that's exactly what they will do. They'll be unlikely to put out any more 8 cars unless there is for some reason a shortage of 3 car sets, the reason being as it could affect the platforming arrangements at Queen Street and possibly at Waverley too. Also more to the point as stated above, there are four car units on other routes just now and to change would involve having to replace those - think of the railway as one big jenga puzzle - move one peice and there's a big chance it will affect the rest!

It would also mean that planners who are working on the new diagrams for the timetable change would be given additional work which they probably wouldn't have time to do. Better to leave it all until the timetable change and do it in one fell swoop.

I don’t quite follow this. Only platform difference at Glasgow would be number 6 becoming unavailable for 8 cars. Never used platform 1.

Is it a complete rework to rule that out ?

Surely it’s all about shunting the sets about to make the 8 cars up. 4 cars will be scattered about network.

6, 3 cars & 10, 4 cars on E&G today with 102+106 on even 00 & 108+113 on odd 00 ex GLQ. No sign of 101 yet unless it was on any of the C'naulds I didn't get. Could they introduce more 8 cars in the 2 months when the Christmas markets are on in both citys and it's usually a lot busier perhaps?

Hmmmm yes presently it should be ok, although only just. Can't help but seeing passengers from Linlithgow getting stiffed again in the long term as ridership increases!

Anyway, not wanting to stray off topic, can't wait to see the first 8-car sets up and running at the end of the month! Great timing too, just before Edinburgh Fringe.

Sadly still the case. Is it confirmed that there will be no 4-car services aside from the shuttles?

according to the 385 formations it still to be delivered but according to RTT there no diagrams to craigentinny for the rest of the month.
They're normally added quite late, the engine that arrives at 17:11 is key. If it runs then there'll be a delivery

There was a light engine today but it was cancelled. There are diagrams for light engines on the 18th, 22nd - 25th and 29th - 31st so there might be a delivery.
